The spectacular landscape of Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park (home to – yes – clear-water lakes, but also dramatic waterfalls, dense woodland and subterranean cave systems) is within your grasp at Camp Korana. This large family- and dog-friendly site is a five-minute drive from the visitors’ entrance to the nature reserve. It stretches over 35 hectares between the D1 highway and the Korana river, which – fun fact – is fed by the waterfalls in the park. See how it’s all connected? Guests can choose their favourite spot to set up on site: will you favour a peaceful corner shaded by the trees or perhaps a remote hilltop pitch so as to make the most of the splendid views? Whatever you decide, chances are you can’t wait to start exploring this area in the southern reaches of Karlovac County. Nordic walking poles (available for hire) will help you navigate this mountainous terrain; if hilly ascents don’t faze you one bit, you can also hire a bike at reception. Amenities include a large, airy restaurant, with plenty of outdoor seating on a terrace with views of the river and the hills. In the summer months, the terrace becomes the stage for evening entertainments such as music concerts. In addition to a modern toilet block (with showers) and a washing-up area, there’s a small shop on site for your essentials; for anything else you might need, the D1 highway is dotted with supermarkets (the nearest is a five-minute walk from Camp Korana, part of a small shopping centre with a pizza place and a petrol station).

Liked A wonderful stay at Camping Korana!

We really appreciated being able to choose wherever we wanted to set up our camp. The campsite is beautiful, very green, wooded and gently hilly, making it easy to find a lovely spot.

We found a perfect place, not too far from the sanitary facilities but still secluded enough to feel peaceful and private. A big bonus was having shade early in the morning and again in the late afternoon, which was especially welcome in summer!

The sanitary facilities were extremely clean. It wasn’t very busy during our stay, but we still saw the cleaning staff coming by regularly to keep everything spotless.

There are also small wooden picnic tables with benches around the campsite, which are very convenient for meals or simply enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

A peaceful, green and very pleasant campsite that we would definitely recommend, especially if you are visiting Plitvice Lakes!

Disliked The only negative point, but unfortunately quite an unpleasant one, was the price difference at check-out.

There was a difference of around €20 between the price shown on my Pitchup reservation and the amount I was actually charged by Camping Korana. For example, my 12-year-old daughter was considered a child on Pitchup, but an adult according to the campsite’s pricing policy.

Discovering this extra charge only at check-out, just as we were about to leave, was really disappointing. If the campsite accepts bookings through Pitchup, I believe the pricing criteria should be consistent, or any difference should at least be made very clear before arrival.

I tried to explain the situation for about ten minutes, but the staff member simply kept saying that “it’s the computer” and showed no willingness to find a solution or make a small commercial gesture. In the end, I had no real choice but to pay the difference, while my children were waiting in the car and we had a long drive ahead of us.

It left us with an unpleasant feeling at the very end of what had otherwise been a really enjoyable stay. I hope the campsite and Pitchup can resolve this pricing discrepancy so that other guests don’t have the same experience.

Liked Sanitäranlagen sehr sauber. Viele schöne Stellplätze im Wald. Freie Wahl des Platzes. Schönes Restaurant. Preis-Leistung fair.

Disliked Lärm von der nahe gelegenen Strasse, insbesondere Töffs. Laden ist nicht so gut bestückt. Man bekommt das Nötige. Cafe Bar geschlossen. Badesee war trocken (dafür kann der Campingplatz jedoch nichts).

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Plitvice Lakes National Park is home to large Lake Kozjak. Explore it on a rowing boat (which you can hire on the eastern bank) or admire its clear waters from a number of self-guided circular trails that might also take you past neighbouring Lake Prošćansko and the Great Waterfall. During your wanderings, you might spot woodpeckers, owls and birds of prey. Don’t forget a cardigan if you visit the Caves of Barać (15 minutes’ drive), where the temperature barely reaches double digits (it’s a distinctly chilly 9ºC). Locally discovered artefacts indicate that these subterranean caverns were inhabited by lions and bears during the Ice Age. A guided tour takes you past stalagmites and other rock formations. The Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre, in Smiljan (one hour and 15 minutes), is a complex that includes the 19th-century inventor’s childhood home, where interactive displays illustrate his life, experiments and inventions.
