  • Peaceful family park on the shores of Lake Panguipulli
  • Kayak rental and heaps of fly fishing spots within easy reach
  • Freshly baked bread, locally grown veg, hens' eggs and honey for sale

Nativo Camping is a highly scenic spot on the northern shore of Lake Panguipulli – one of seven glacial lakes in Chile's Lake District – surrounded by snow-topped volcanoes, black-sand beaches and the Andes mountain range.

There's heaps to do around here: lakeside walks and scenic drives to be had on land, and plenty of swimming areas, places to rent kayaks and excellent fly fishing spots for water-themed hours. And as this is a volcanic area, there are plenty of thermal spas and wellness centres to get well and truly pampered at too: see how you like the Japanese-inspired labyrinth of pools at the hidden forest hot springs of Termas Geometricas (you'll definitely like...).

Down a two kilometre-long gravel track off Highway 203, family-run Nativo Camping is a peaceful park with roomy pitches that are partially shaded and set on grassy spots among mature woodland across the park's back to nature-style layout.

You won't have to go far to sample the local cuisine: the site owners sell freshly baked bread, locally produced vegetables, eggs, honey and homemade jams, and plenty of restaurants are in local town Panguipulli.

Panguipulli is also well served by facilities such as ATMs, supermarkets, a tourist information centre and independent shops selling food and ancestral crafts.

Recomendable

Local attractions

Due to its glacial past, the watery expanses of of Chile's Lake District are fed with spectacularly crystalline meltwater and bordered by snaking coastlines and volcanic ash beaches, all framed by dense alpine forests – all in all, this is a highly – highly – scenic setting.

As well as getting a lot of rest and relaxation around here, you'll also have plenty of outdoorsy times to choose from. For a start, there are heaps of walking trails along the lakeshore and its surrounding landscape, as well as a well-maintained road with various viewing points across the water for scenic road trips of the Lake District.

Access to the lake's black sands is easy, and the swimming area is roped off with floats around 40 metres offshore; the morning cloud cover typically disappears by noon, leaving you with sunny afternoons for beachside lazing. No need to pack up a picnic either – plenty of vendors punctuate the shore selling snacky treats such as fruit, tortillas and pastries, and the restaurant nearby serves a good range of local cuisine. Paddleboats and kayaks are available for hire by the half hour, and a 45-minute boat trip takes you on a tour of the lake.

For angling, take the signposted road along the lake's shore towards Choshuenco and up to Huanehue Bridge to fish the river from there.
