Due to its glacial past, the watery expanses of of Chile's Lake District are fed with spectacularly crystalline meltwater and bordered by snaking coastlines and volcanic ash beaches, all framed by dense alpine forests – all in all, this is a highly – highly – scenic setting. As well as getting a lot of rest and relaxation around here, you'll also have plenty of outdoorsy times to choose from. For a start, there are heaps of walking trails along the lakeshore and its surrounding landscape, as well as a well-maintained road with various viewing points across the water for scenic road trips of the Lake District. Access to the lake's black sands is easy, and the swimming area is roped off with floats around 40 metres offshore; the morning cloud cover typically disappears by noon, leaving you with sunny afternoons for beachside lazing. No need to pack up a picnic either – plenty of vendors punctuate the shore selling snacky treats such as fruit, tortillas and pastries, and the restaurant nearby serves a good range of local cuisine. Paddleboats and kayaks are available for hire by the half hour, and a 45-minute boat trip takes you on a tour of the lake. For angling, take the signposted road along the lake's shore towards Choshuenco and up to Huanehue Bridge to fish the river from there.
