  • Estrie family campground five minutes' drive from Richmond
  • Close to kayaking, horse riding, vineyards and Green Route bike path
  • Heated pool, hot tub, games, canteen and activities at the park
Coming to Québec for fresh air and a whole load of outdoor activities? Head a couple of kilometres out of Richmond and get set up at Camping Melbourne, a family campground with bags of space and ample scope for lots to do. Getting out in the open starts right here at this Estrie park – it’s in a wooded area with access to several hiking trails and a golf course just next door (most handy for those who like to squeeze in a round or two while on vacation). If golf’s not your game, have a go at the offerings set up around the park: pétanque, volleyball, irons (like horseshoes but en français), shuffleboard and arcade games. All got a bit overheated? Head over to the open-air lagoon swimming pool for a dip, take a breather with a stroll by the small artificial lake or grab a seat while the kids splash about at the water play area. If, on the other hand, it’s warming up you should need, then grab a spot in the hot tub (perhaps while the tiddlers take to the play area for a bit of running about?) On top of that there’s also a programme of activities for kids, and you’ll often find themed evenings on the menu too. And with that in mind it’s even handier that you won’t have to make too much of a break for food: the campground’s canteen serves up plenty of options to keep everyone going, including pizzas, salads, burgers and a tasty range of poutines.

Local attractions

Drag yourselves away from all the antics at the park and a good first port of call is the mighty Saint-François River, a kilometre away and a top spot for canoe and kayak adventures. If you’ve not got your own kit, an activity centre in Richmond (five minutes’ drive) will sort you with days of family paddling or more challenging white-water routes. If that’s not your idea of a great way to get around, perhaps instead saddle up for horse riding from Ulverton (10 minutes), tackle a bit of Québec’s famed Green Route cycle path or set forth on the Chemin des Cantons route to take in the area’s villages, bridges and characterful round barns. Also on the list for family days should be Richmond’s Slate Museum, Granby Zoo (50 minutes) and the magical illuminated trails at Foresta Lumina (50 minutes). If you haven’t got the kids with you, perhaps some exploration of the local vineyards might be in order instead? For a full-on day out, it’s about an hour and a half’s drive to the fab city of Montreal.
