  • Green, shaded site centrally located within Búzios resort
  • Snorkelling and surfing beaches within two kilometres
  • Restaurant, grocery store and campers' kitchen on site
Beaches, beaches, beaches – at least 20 of them, in fact… that’s what first attracted famed film icon Brigitte Bardot to the fishing village of Búzios back in the swinging sixties. And those sandy stretches, dotted around a peninsula around three hours’ drive from Rio de Janeiro, are still a major draw in the 21st century – so much so that the former sleepy settlement itself has grown up into a rather swish resort. Handily placed for those beaches (and for the area’s many restaurants, bars, shops and activities) is friendly Camping Búzios, where grass pitches are surrounded by trees for shade (plus lighting and electricity, thanks to the lamps and sockets cunningly concealed within the trunks…) The city centre is around three kilometres away, but more importantly there are plenty of eating and drinking spots within walking distance and beaches around a kilometre away. It’s not just the trees that offer up handy facilities here – also on site is a simple restaurant with home-cooked meals, snacks and breakfasts, plus a communal kitchen with a gas stove (although you’ll need to provide whatever remaining kit you need to knock up meals). A grocery store stocks a range of holiday essentials including canned goods, cookies, ice creams and cool beers. Remnants of the day’s beach trip can be hosed off at the site’s outdoor showers; among the other amenities are a hot bath and toilets (two each for the ladies and the gents). This is a family-friendly site but please note that it might not be suitable for very young kids (five and under) during major holidays and carnival time.

Local attractions

So, those beaches… where first? Ferradura is a good place to start – not solely because it’s the closest at 15 minutes’ stroll away but also because it’s a fine place to head out to sea with a snorkel. If you’d prefer to clutch a surfboard, take it to Geriba beach (five minutes’ drive) for the best waves. The options don’t stop there, of course – there’s also Ossos beach, Manguinhos, Olho de Boi, Armação Azeda, João Fernandes… and plenty of footpaths to wander along if you’d like to link a few up with a bit of a coastal wander. If all the gorgeous beaches get a bit too much (?), have a chat with the folk on site who can suggest hikes or help sort boat or buggy rides nearby. There are lots of little cobbled streets to wander through in town, and more history over in Cabo Frio (40 minutes’ drive), one of Brazil’s oldest cities. Oh, and do give a wave to Ms Bardot, now immortalised in a seaside statue about three kilometres away.
