General

  • Riverside site just outside Comblain-les-Tours in the Belgian Ardennes
  • On the RAVeL network of walking and cycle paths
  • Mini animal park, outdoor fitness area and playground

It’s a rocky, rivery outlook from the pitches at Camping Le Rocher de la Vierge, and it’s a rocky, rivery area surrounding the place too: tthis is the Belgian Ardennes. Which means... this is an excellent base for fresh-air adventures including kayaking, mountain biking and river fishing.

Hiking types have a full menu of routes awaiting their footprints: the site is on the RAVeL green path network, and close to the GR 57 long-distance route. (If that’s a little daunting, take advice from a member of staff on shorter circular routes, and download one of their GPS maps to keep you on track. They’ve even got a nifty gadget you can borrow to ensure you don’t go astray.)

Once you’ve made it back in one piece, refuel at the cafeteria with a meal and beer on the open terrace or satisfy immediate munchies at the fast food kiosk – this being Belgium, it has to be national fave chips and mayo if you want to fit in with the locals... A couple of restaurants and a convenience store are within 15 minutes’ walk too.

Burn off the effects of all those fries at the outdoor gym or with games of volleyball, football or homeball (a kind of cross between football and netball; local folk can explain the intricacies). There’s a playground, sandpit, trampoline and petting zoo for the tiddlers and a pétanque court and table tennis for the gentle amusement of grownups.

Organised activities for all ages run in summer.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

A charge of €1.00 applies for the use of the shower.

Mostly peaceful, shame about the railway line, luckily it only runs during the daytime.

    Disliked:

Site was very tired. Sanitary facilities desperately need updating, the touring pitches we were on had no showers. The approach to the site is very scruffy, a lot of the static pitches are obviously untended and let down the overall appearance. Shame because this site could be really nice.

Nothing! We didn't stay here as we realised when we pulled up that it had been grossly misrepresented on the pitch up website. The majority of the site is made up of very old and run down permanent static caravans. The facilities looked dirty and the 2 vending machines had been smashed. We didn't feel safe so turned around and left!

The tent pitch area is fairly quiet and large so you have a decent sized area to yourself and limited supervision.

    Disliked:

The toilet block...functions but is about a 5 minute walk from where we had our tent pitched. There were closer toilets but they hadn't been cleaned in what looked like months and they didn't look usable. There is a train that goes past regularly including the night and is fairly loud. Reception is a pub with limited signage to its whereabouts. Initial impression when you first enter the site really is not good, it is untidy and unkempt. The ground is dry in areas with a lot of what have been campfires that have ruined the ground making it difficult to find an area to pitch. You are on a public footpath/bicycle path with a number of people passing at all hours of the day. You pay a euro for a freezing cold shower in a darkened room with limited lighting and space.

We were booked in for two nights but stayed only one. If we hadn't travelled so far we would not have stayed for one night

    Disliked:

The facilities were poor. The toilets were dirty and the lights did not work. There were piles of rubbish bags nearby
The site was being used by some sort of youth group, so very noisy. A group who must have done something wrong were marched down to where we were parked by the 'camp commandant' who screamed and shouted at them for half an hour
We did not even attempt the showers as were full of young people from this large group
Not what we expected at all. Not surprised that they wanted payment up front. We decided to cut our losses and go

Camp fires! Really friendly other campers near us. Lovely riverside setting. Great base to explore the area, beautiful scenery. Good train service to towns in the area.

    Disliked:

Lack of information on arrival. Grass pitch areas not very flat.
Freight train timetabled in the early hours on the line running by the camp site - we did however get used to it after the first night’s shock awakening!!

Stunning pitch location under trees next to the river. The barman receptionist, Amal was very helpful and speaks good English. Lively bar, well stocked with Belgian beers and karaoke was fun on Saturday night! Friendly locals.

    Disliked:

Litter. Unless you like meat and chips with everything, limited options for food. If you want peace and quiet avoid on Friday and Saturday nights in peak season when the air will be filled with the sound of screaming kids and dogs.

    Disliked:

This is the first holiday that i've taken my wife where she cried when we saw the site. The site looked nothing like what the photos showed on the website. The site looked run down with old broken down caravans and like a builders yard with building materials and machinery everywhere. The bar/café (never found the shop as advertised) was in poor condition so never used it. Some of the children's play apparatus were rusty and broken. The animal petting area consisted of two ponies that had pushed down the wire fencing to get at fresh grass as their compound was bare. The chalet for six we stopped in did not have a full set of accessories i.e. 3 spoons and cups but 15 sharp knives?. Also the water went off twice a day just as you wanted a shower or wash the pots. The hot water also went cold while having a shower.

Nothing at all, not even one thing.

    Disliked:

Where do I start? It's tremendously misleading, the beautiful rock face is across a river, punctuated by some nice train tracks.

The entrance is through a very unwelcoming trailer park with loud dogs.

Then you get to a small bit of grass allegedly "the campsite", with burnt out areas of turf, the toilets weren't great.

In isolation, the campsite had a certain bohemian vibe, but taking the whole picture into consideration, there are much nicer and spots around the area. We Only stayed for one night of our two night booking and moved on, small wonder they wanted prepayment in full, unlike virtually everywhere else we visited.

    Not great at all.

The river and rock and the branch line railway that we could see from the tent.

    Disliked:

The showers and washing-up facilities were quite a way from the tents. The facility near our tents just had toilets and no electricity, so were dark at night. No drinking water near the tents. Washing up facility was good but was situated in the ladies showers, so it was difficult for men to use.

Coming from Lille/Mons/Charleroi/Namur:
Join the E42 and take Exit 7, following the N64 to Huy. At Huy cross the Meuse towards Hamoir on the N66 and at the T-junction just before Hamoir turn left onto the N654. After Comblain-Fairon, on the downhill straight, you will see the entrance to the campsite on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

If riverside living has enticed you to explore the waters further, it’s a five-minute drive to Hamoir for kayaking or canoeing trips on the Ourthe river – wave to your fellow guests as you paddle past the edge of the site. Also not far away (10 minutes or so in the car) are the Comblain cave and the Château de l’Avouerie in Anthisnes, now transformed into a beer and gin museum.

Museums in the region include the rural life museum in Xhoris 10 minutes away, a toy museum in Ferrières, a beer museum on a castle farm in Tillf, and a sweet little bakery museum at the castle in Harzé; all within 15 minutes' drive.

Head off on safari at Le Monde Sauvage, an animal park that’s home to hippos, giraffes and other big beasts. It’s also worth making the 40-minute drive over to La Gleize to see the December 1944 museum, which tells the story of the Battle of the Bulge, complete with weaponry and tanks.
