  • Peaceful campsite on a working Gwynedd farm with amazing ocean views
  • A 20-minute drive from Abersoch, and 50 minutes from Harlech Castle
  • Family- and dog-friendly hilltop site; pub within 10 minutes' drive
If you’re after a dollop of seaside adventure with your camping experience, Pen y Bryn Lleyn in Gwynedd might just be for you – it’s pretty much midway between the cracking beaches at Morfa Nefyn (15 minutes’ drive), Abersoch (20 minutes) and Porth Neigwl (25 minutes). Dogs (well-behaved ones anyway), kids, friends and families are all most welcome on this working farm, with pitches in a peaceful hilltop field (with a gentle slope) blessed with spectacular coastal and countryside views as well as spectacular sunsets. You’re well-catered for with hot showers, chemical loos and a bespoke washing-up sink neatly tucked away in a repurposed static caravan. If you’re into self-catering, barbecues are permitted, and you can source everything you need in the big supermarket at Pwllheli (25 minutes). Changed your mind about cooking? No problem – Tudweiliog village (five minutes) has a down-to-earth pub with a sun-trap beer garden and gorgeous hill views, plus a snooker table and darts board if you feel like challenging new-found friends to a game. If you’re after something fancier, then Abersoch has a whole range of places, from pizzerias to seafood restaurants overlooking the beach.

Local attractions

It’s a walkers’s paradise in these parts – whether you stroll down to Tudweiliog (40 minutes’ walk) for a pint at the pub, or up your game with a long-distance hike along part of the glorious Wales Coast Path (10 minutes’ drive to pick up the path at Porth Ysgaden), you’ll be rewarded by spectacular views over hills or clifftops. Beach bunnies have a choice of destinations, but if you’d like to have a go at surfing, kayaking or paddleboarding, your best bet is Porth Neigwl (25 minutes), where you can also rent equipment and take lessons. For bucket-and-spade-type family days on the sand, Abersoch (20 minutes) has everything you need, from plenty of space on the sheltered beach to a choice of boat trips. If you’d like to ramp up the cultural kudos of your hols, a day trip to Portmeirion (50 minutes) will see you exploring a colourful seaside village with a madcap, 1920s-built mishmash of Italian, Gothic and Tudor-style architecture. Going back further in time, the magnificent medieval castle at Harlech (an hour) perches on a rocky crag and is open for tours and jousting re-enactments.
