Electric grass pitch

  • Peaceful, fully serviced North Wales site on the edge of Snowdonia
  • A 10-minute drive to Caernarfon Castle; 20 to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Table tennis, skittles and pool on site, plus 20 acres to explore
With a magical setting overlooking Eryri (Snowdonia) hills, Rhyd y Galen is a peaceful caravan and camping park in rural North Wales. Fancy exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the beautiful North Wales coastline and the Isle of Anglesey? Then this is your place. For your ease, access to the grass camping pitches is via tarmac roads. Generous in size and fully serviced, they come with a whole host of facilities, from a spotless shower block, well lit at night for your convenience and complete with hair dryers to keep you looking your best, to a family-friendly baby-changing unit and a laundry. On hand are 20 acres of land for families (and any canine pals) wanting to be out walking, playing and exploring, and if the kids should get restless, keep them entertained with games of table tennis, table football, skittles or pool. If you need to stock up on groceries, there are several supermarkets in Caernarfon (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy making a night of it in the town’s pubs and restaurants, ditch the car and jump in a local taxi.

What customers say

Top marks for this campsite! Spotless pitches, brilliant facilities, and super staff. Great base for Snowdonia and Anglesey. A bit of road noise, but most are keen to come back.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely, well looked after site. Very clean facilities. Great location for surrounding areas.

Disliked The road noise was constant unfortunately and would potentially stop us from staying again.

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the cleanliness of our facilities and found our site to be well looked after and in a great location.

We’re sorry to hear that the road noise impacted your stay. While our location provides convenient access to surrounding areas, we understand that traffic can sometimes be noticeable from the pitch you were on. Your comments are valuable, and we’ll continue to explore ways to help reduce the impact for our guests.

Fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked The site is clean and tidy and the toilet facilties are good

Disliked Onsite entertainment is at a minimum and there is no shop for essentials. Also some of the resident caravaners are rude and think they own the place telling people to be quiet when talking in their own awnings when it isn't even late. I saw one even complain about a small boy riding his bike. Poor lad was devastated.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re pleased to hear you found the site clean and tidy and the toilet facilities well maintained. We’re sorry, however, that your experience was affected by the behaviour of others on site — we want all our guests to feel welcome and comfortable during their stay, but do ask that everyone keeps noise levels down as not to disturb other guests. The site's facilities are clearly listed on the website. We have a games barn with free to use pool table, table tennis, table football and skittles. There is no clubhouse or fruit machines on site. We do not have a shop, as we encourage our guests to support the community shop in the village.

Local attractions

Standing where the Afont Seiont river meets the Menai Strait, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is a forbidding medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perhaps best known as the place where Prince Charles was invested in 1969, it also houses the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which explores the history of this infantry regiment. If you’re in a ‘feel the fear, but do it anyway’ mood, you can head to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes), where the Velocity 2 zipline stretches across a lake, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 100mph. If you are brave enough to keep your eyes open during your flight, you can also take in splendid views of Eryri (Snowdonia). For something less hair-raising, Portmeirion (40 minutes) is a village featuring Italian-inspired pastel-coloured buildings and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Grab an ice cream from Italian gelateria Caffi’r Angel, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets or along the sandy beach on the Afon Dwyryd estuary.
