  • Laidback site with 8.5 acres in Bryneglwys village
  • A 25-minute drive from Lake Bala and 40 minutes from Chester
  • Fresh eggs, friendly farm animals and a well-stocked outdoor bar
A chilled site in a quiet corner of Denbighshire, New Inn is a fine place to bag a relaxed rural break. With its splendid views, this popular little spot is within easy reach of attractions in and around Snowdonia, Chester and beyond. Although the former pub is permanently closed, it has a well-stocked outdoor bar called the Wobbly Dog selling draft beer and seasonal local produce. The peaceful park is also a five-minute stroll from Bryneglwys village centre, where the local stores and tea room are on hand to sort out any off-site food needs. Need to organise a bulk shop? Corwen (15 minutes' drive) is home to a bigger range of grocery shops. One of the big draws of New Inn is the number of simple pleasures to be had here, like collecting your own eggs from the site's friendly hens or watching the tame sheep frolicking through the grass. There's also ample room for setting up bonfires or barbecues and for roaming through the wilder parts of the 8.5-acre grounds. The facilities at this back to basics spot are low-key but well-maintained, with a toilet block that's got four toilets, four hot-water sinks, two showers and a washing-up sink. Phone charging is available too, to help you keep power up for your outings.

What customers say

A gem of a campsite! Owners are super friendly, pitches are grand, and the on-site bar's a treat. Animal feeding and campfires are a hit with the kids. Lovely views, though it can be a bit breezy. Plenty of regulars here.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (large, no pets)

Liked Lovely, hospitable and welcoming owners. Literally cannot do enough to make the stay as enjoyable as possible. Pitches set up so you have an amazing amount of space. Beautiful scenery and an opportunity to enjoy all the local area has to offer. The animals are a bonus too! The car free site makes it calm and quiet and the ability to have open fires is a really nice thing. The morretti/ whiskey isn’t bad either at the small and friendly bar…

Non-electric grass tent pitch (large, no pets)

Liked Everything! We returned to the New Inn after loving our stay last year and it didn’t disappoint. We were greeted again with a friendly welcome and the freedom to choose a pitch - which was clean, flat (considering its on a Welsh hillside!) and had a beautiful view. The whole site including the pitches, loos and showers (which are hot, free and continuous, not needing a button to be pressed every 20 seconds) were impeccably clean. We loved making friends with the animals - the chickens are inquisitive but can be gently shooed away when needed! Leigh, the owner, took the children (and adults) round to feed the sheep, pigs and hens and let them collect fresh eggs for breakfast. It's lovely that he makes sure all the children are included and that everyone gets a turn. We'll be keeping an eye on facebook for updates on Biscuit the Pigeon and the hatching chicks!
The area is beautiful with walks straight from the site into the hills behind. We still haven't conquered the peak so we'll definitely be back again next year!

Disliked The 4+ hour drive to get there from Norfolk - but it's worth it!!!

Non-electric grass tent pitch (large, no pets)

Liked What's to like?, well, a lot. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. Nothing is too much bother. They take the kids (and big kids) to feed the animals (Chickens, Pigs and sheep). The sign says animal feeding Saturday morning at 10:00, but we were there just over a week and they would round up anyone that wanted to help feed them most days , so you won't miss out...Communal fire and s'more making on a Saturday night. A simple but well stocked bar (shed) with a bitter, cider and large on tap (plus spirit and mixers) and seating area. Individual fire pits offered and logs to buy to have by your own tent.

They had some eggs in an incubator they showed the kids and kept us up-to-date, we where lucky to see them hatch.

Good location for days out.

No cars on site (other than to set up and pack up), which is always a positive in my book.

The pitches are well cut and surrounded by wild grass, with makes for a nice environment rather than a packed in field. It is on a bit of a slope, so make sure you pitch the correct way round 😜.

The chickens roam free, visit your tent often and if your not on the ball, will steal food. I did make the mistake of having a BBQ chicken head height, but the kids loved (gently) shoeing them away and keeping their food protected and loved having them around generally and all other times.

All in all, a brilliant little campsite with a great vibe, made better by the owners attitude, enthusiasm and commitment.

Local attractions

Get gallivanting through the green grounds of Erddig Hall (30 minutes' drive), Chirk Castle (30 minutes) or Ness Botanic Gardens (50 minutes) for fab floral displays, impressive buildings and splendid outdoor strolls. They have something else in common too: top-rated cafés where you can take afternoon tea in genteel garden surrounds. Those magnificently manicured spots strike a cracking contrast with wilder haunts like the shores of Lake Bala (25 minutes), Castell Dinas Brân (25 minutes) and Horseshoe Falls (20 minutes). There's also scope for giving your walking boots and mountain bikes a run for their money at Oneplanet Adventure (10 minutes), a forest visitor centre surrounded by a host of waymarked trails. Further full-on action can be found at the National White Water Centre (30 minutes), while those of a less intrepid temperament have Chester Zoo (40 minutes) not much further away. After making friends with sloths, elephants and jaguars, saunter down into the centre for a stroll down by the Dee or a laidback riverboat cruise.
