Glasbury river a stones throw away from the campsite

  • Family-friendly Powys campsite on the banks of the River Wye
  • Hay-on Wye and Offa’s Dyke Path 10 minutes’ drive; Hereford 40 minutes
  • Kayak and canoe hire at the adjacent activity centre; café on site
Looking for an action-packed outdoor break with lots of high-octane watery fun to be had? A stay at River Wye Campsite puts you right on the banks of the river at Glasbury-on-Wye. Once there, you can hire canoes or kayaks to paddle downstream, go gorge walking along the Wye, or join in archery and axe-throwing sessions (at an extra cost) at the adjacent activity centre. No problem if your tastes lean more towards culture rather than sporting action, as the campsite is 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on Wye, making it a clever base for visiting the famed ‘book town’ – especially during the the annual Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, held in late May and early June. Handy on-site facilities include a shower block with plenty of hot water (great for easing tired muscles after a day kayaking on the Wye), a washing-up area and plenty of parking space, either in the car park or next to your tent. Keen to upgrade your alfresco cooking skills? You’re welcome to use free-standing barbecues but please ensure they are raised off the grass to prevent any damage. Packs of kindling can be bought on site, and there’s a covered seating area for communal picnics. If you’d rather someone else took care of the catering, pick up soft drinks, ice cream and tempting cakes in the Paddlers Rest Café – you can order full English breakfasts in there too. On weekends throughout the summer months, the site has regular pop-up trucks with street food and regular live music. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join in the fun, and there are woodland walks direct from the pitches to keep them exercised too. The owners ask that they are kept on leads while on site, please.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked location

Disliked dirty blocked toilets, staff new and didn’t know about layout of site or where too park and music being played until 3am from inconsiderate campers ,ruined our night away

From the manager: I'm really sorry to hear about your experience and sad that we are only learning about this via a review and not because you came into the cafe / reception to tell us anything during your stay. If you had notified us at the time we could have done something about every point you have mentioned. We would like to think that we are very approachable and would always deal with any situation to the best of our ability in the shortest time possible. Once again, sorry we didn't meet your expectations and thank you for taking the time to write a review and help us improve our service.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked The staff are very helpful and friendly. I like the choices of fields available. The main showers and toilets are kept very clean. It is next to the river.

Disliked In the main shower block there are two showers for women. Only one of them worked during my stay.

All in all, a brilliant experience. I’ll definitely be back!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Review: 8/10 – River Wye Campsite

I had a fantastic stay at River Wye Campsite! The staff were absolutely brilliant – friendly, approachable, and went above and beyond, especially when it came to helping me store medication that needed to be kept chilled. The coffee on site was a lovely bonus – genuinely some of the nicest I’ve had at a campsite.

The location is perfect for families, couples, and even dogs. There’s a beautiful riverside walk right from the site, and plenty of well-thought-out activities to keep children and adults entertained alike.

Disliked The only thing that stops this from being a 10/10 is the washroom facilities – they’re functional but would really benefit from a modern update to match the quality of the rest of the site.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Site had variety of spots to choose

Disliked Showers were not that warm. Also my battery pack was stolen when on charge so definitely not somewhere you want to leave valuables - only while in shower and came back and gone!

From the manager: Hi James

Im really sorry your battery pack went missing - we haven't had a report like this before in 5 years of operating - we are a friendly family run and family orientated campsite. Many campers come and charge their phones and packs in our onsite cafe no problem at all. If this is found at all I will contact you.

Kind regards
Claire

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked The pitch was lovely and quiet with plenty of space and the cafe was lovely

Disliked One of the toilet blocks was closed in the morning which meant there was a bit of a queue for the showers as the door could be locked to the whole block by the person using it. The campsite is also in a housing estate so houses overlook part of the campsite so if you want to be completely in nature be aware of this

Local attractions

For riverside rambles with the kids and dogs, join the Wye Valley Walk directly from your pitch, or head into the Brecon Beacons National Park (20 minutes’ drive) for more testing walks amid mountain landscapes. To trace the ancient border between England and Wales on a longer hike, follow Offa’s Dyke Path along Hergest Ridge from Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) to Kington (four and a half hours’ walk). Need a day off from all the energetic stuff? Treat kids to a day out among the donkeys and alpacas at the Small Breeds Farm Park (25 minutes’ drive), while science buffs might appreciate a chance to peer at the universe through telescopes at The Spaceguard Centre (50 minutes, don’t miss the views over the Welsh hills into Shropshire). Combine sightseeing with history by visiting the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition at the Norman cathedral in Hereford (40 minutes), and if the weather’s behaving, have a jaunt around the colourful flower borders at Hergest Croft Gardens (25 minutes).
