  • Furnished ecolodges on Loch Katrine, 20 minutes from Callander
  • Go Ape Aberfoyle 15 minutes’ drive; Stirling 45 minutes
  • Kitchenette; decked area with views of the lake; discounted cruises
Whether you’re after waterfront strolls or challenging hikes (for you and your canine companion) along forested mountain trails, a holiday in the Trossachs ought to deliver aplenty. A top place to stay to make the most of all the area has to offer is Loch Katrine Eco Lodges, a family-friendly site on the easternmost shore of Loch Katrine, overlooked by Ben A’an mountain. The cosy ecolodges come with real beds, a toilet and sink (a shower block is nearby) and a kitchenette with microwave, fridge, toaster and, of course, a kettle for a nice morning (or afternoon) brew. Other comforts include a TV, but why would you be watching telly when you can sit on your private decked area – maybe with a light lunch on the picnic table – taking in unforgettable views of the lake? When you want to progress from watching the lake to sailing on it, it’s good to know that staying here entitles you to a 10% discount on scheduled cruises, so book yourself on the Steamship Sir Walter Scott (which has been plying these waters since 1900) or one of the other boats. Cruises run daily and throughout the year, and it’s less than a five-minute walk to the departure point (Trossachs Pier). If you want to stay on dry land and explore the surrounding woodland on two wheels, a 10% off cycle hire ensures that you don’t feel left out of the money-off offers. For shops, restaurants and bars, Aberfoyle is a 15-minute drive from the site, or you can head to Callander (20 minutes).

What customers say

Lovely spot and quiet, with grand views of Loch Katrine. Cosy, clean lodges/pods with private loos a plus. Friendly staff. Boat trip brilliant. No cooking in some, beds could be better in a few, and the midges are a bother.

Ben lodge (four person)

Liked The view and surroundings were absolutely breathtaking. There are numerous walks/ hikes to do from the venue itself, which is lovely if you don’t want to drive too much. Each eco cabin has its own dedicated bathroom (just outside the eco cabins), which is very convenient.

Disliked It felt like the staff had forgotten that we were coming. When we arrived (between 16:00 and 17:00 as stipulated), our eco cabin door was standing wide open. We did not have a welcome pack so had to walk back to reception to ask for the WiFi details (we later found the “welcome pack” stuffed between the counter and microwave with old, dried wet wipes in between the pages). Our barbecue that we’d pre-booked was dirty and very greasy, and they didn’t give us a lighter or any other barbecue equipment (we saw that other cabins who also had the barbecues had these). There was a massive spider and spiderwebs in one of the glasses that had clearly been in there for a while (so it definitely would have been there when the cleaner was in). All in all just a very disappointing experience which is a shame as the location is so lovely.

Loch lodge (four person, ensuite)

Liked Prachtige locatie!

Ben lodge (four person)

Liked Location

Disliked Booked an Echo Lodge on the provision that there would be 1 or 2 but no more than 2 steps to gain access. Daughter is a wheelchair user but can manager 1 or 2 steps. Assured that there are only 1 or 2 steps to gain access, but the lodge was not wheelchair accessible. I did not need wheelchair accessible as long as there were only 1 or 2 steps.
Arrived to a broken key in the lock which took 2 hrs to resolve.
There were four steps, split level decking and the first two steps were broken, slanted forward and off to one side. The first two steps were nearly two feet in height.
Told there were no other pods available to move to.
The pod was the only one on site with four steps, split level decking and height of the steps to that level. Staff member stated “well what do you want me to do about it? It’s not like I walk to the lodges and count the steps, can’t you sleep in your van in the car park? “ this was the same staff member that made the booking over the phone. I stated that I have an awning to store equipment and was told I can not use the awning, to try camping in the park. I stated I do not have a permit to camp in the park, staff member stated that the rangers would probably move us on them.
Left with no where to go or to stay with a disabled 12yr old child.
The more I have thought on this the more upset that I am. The absolute disregard for the safety and wellbeing of a customer that paid to stay in an accommodation, did their due diligence to ensure it was suitable for our needs to be told to sleep in the car park is disgraceful.
Refused to refund as we were told the pod was not wheelchair accessible, I reiterated multiple times that the issue was the steps and the height of them which was fully discussed at the time of booking. (Apparently wheelchair user are all confined to the wheelchair and unable to walk at all)
Dog excrement everywhere.
There is little to no privacy as the public path runs directly in front of the pods.

Local attractions

You’ve explored the forest on foot, now it’s time to see it from above. At Go Ape Aberfoyle (15 minutes’ drive), ziplines and high-rope courses put you high above the tree canopy, so you can take in remarkable sights of Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, its lakes and moorland. Stirling (45 minutes), on the River Forth, is dominated by Stirling Castle, a largely 16th-century structure sitting atop a craggy plateau. Staff in Renaissance garb move through the elegant interiors, recreating the court of King James V. Near the university campus, the National Wallace Monument has far-reaching views of the city and beyond. Highlights in Glasgow (60 minutes) include the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, with collections ranging from natural history to the decorative arts, including furniture pieces by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. After visiting the Botanic Gardens, head to the National Piping Centre to learn about Scotland’s famed bagpipes.
