  • Scenic Highlands site by the shores of Loch Ness
  • A 25-minute drive from Urquhart Castle and 55 minutes from Inverness
  • Restaurant and shop on site; watersports and archery nearby
If you fancy spending some of your holiday trying to spot Nessie from lakeshores, and some taking in the scenic Scottish Highlands, take a look at Loch Ness Highland Resort, a family-friendly site in the village of Fort Augustus. Just five minutes’ walk (less than half a mile) from the shores of the famed Loch Ness, there are no prizes for guessing what the biggest draw is around these parts. The site’s also about five minutes from boat cruises on the loch, and from the Caledonian Canal (which runs from Inverness to the west coast at Fort William) and the 79-mile Great Glen Way that largely follows its route. For those in need of rather more activity, the site team can recommend local activities such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, gorge walking, river rafting, rock climbing, abseiling and archery, so staying busy is a cinch. The site itself also spreads across 40 acres of countryside, so kids (and excitable grownups) will also have plenty of space to run about in. All this could possibly be hungry work so it's handy that there's a bar-restaurant right on site to sort meals, and a handful of local eateries in the pretty Fort Augustus. After making sure everyone is fed, spend the long evenings during high season keeping eyes wide open to spy out eagles, ospreys, red stags, pine martens and red squirrels.

What customers say

Grand spot near Fort Augustus & Loch Ness. Staff are dead sound and helpful. Pitches mostly big and clean, new play park brilliant for kids. But facilities, especially loos/showers, are a bit basic and not enough. Some felt it was unfinished, gravel pitches rough. Bar/food got mixed views.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The grounds are in very good level condition very easy to get parked up in the large pitches. The young lady on the desk upon arrival was very friendly and VERY helpful, i requested a pitch a tad closer to the shower block. This was not an issue for the lady. The toilet and shower blocks wer very clean and regularly cleaned. The site is a very short walk to fort augustus. Which is a very nice village. We even got to see the loch's do there thing. Didnt see nessie. But learned alot about the history of both the loch and nessie!

Disliked We went for food at the on site restaurant. Personally we were very disapointed!! My wifes chilli was more like a plate of winalot with rice! Burnt chilli does not look or taste good. I ordered the venison and haggis burger with chips. It was on the specials board. And now i know why! The burger was not enjoyable and actually looked like a frozen farmfoods burger if im honest. Needless to say it tasted nothing like venison. The haggis was ok but just dolloped on the top. The manager was mortified, when he asked how the food was. He was very apologetic.

Liked The bar and restaurant looked nice, however we arrived too late and they had stopped serving food.

Disliked The shower/toilet facilities were basic and there weren’t enough for the number of campers.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The views and layout on the site!

Disliked The shower blocks. 2 toilets locked (probably because there were not many pitches booked). But the other toilets no loo roll! The showers, nothing dry to stand on, a simple raised mat in rubber would suffice. And if you want a warm/hot shower be prepared to take your time. The minute you want warm there is zero pressure! So a little dribble. The bins were filled to the limit so hard to stay tidy! As there were hardly anyone staying it seems like they don't check the bins regularly.

Non-electric gravel and hardstanding touring caravan pitch

Liked Play area (if it was closer to the touring tent)

Disliked Terrible toilet / shower ‘facilities’. Not family friendly at all. Small port a loo style toilets and showers. Impossible to use with small children, no benches or space to change, water temperature dangerous and kept going from freezing to burning, blocked drains so the showers flooded, full of mould, didn’t see them cleaned at all, empty toilet rolls, not even a soap dispenser in the one toilet.
7 cubicles for the whole site, not enough.
Washing up facilities also rubbish - small area and no hot water.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Great location for walking into the village and getting out and about. Pitches a good size. The staff really friendly and helpful

Disliked The toilet/shower/dishwashing area is inadequate for the amount of pitches. Often had to queue to shower or wash dishes. ( the site was nowhere near full) No hand driers in toilets, ran out of toilet paper. No space for drying yourself in the shower. This is a great site and hopefully this is only temporary and they plan to improve this facility

Local attractions

Explores of Loch Ness are an absolute must on any stay here. Make immediate tracks from base to the spectacularly placed Urquhart Castle (25 minutes’ drive), then continue onwards to the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition (30 minutes) to learn about 500 million years of the lake’s history and to find out where all those Nessie stories started. Travel the length of Loch Ness to reach Inverness (55 minutes), where there are botanic gardens to wander, dolphin-spotting tours to take, a cathedral and castle to visit, museums and arts centres to traipse through, and plenty of shopping to be had. Just outside the city, a stop at Culloden (an hour and five minutes) comes highly recommended to learn more about the battle that ended the Jacobite uprising of the 18th century. Heading south instead, a 50-minute drive will land guests in Fort William, the starting point of hikes up Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, as well as the home of the Ben Nevis Distillery and the West Highland Museum. Further afield, it’s a little over an hour to the edge of Cairngorms National Park, explores of which should include stops at Dalwhinnie Distillery, the Highland Folk Museum, RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and Landmark Forest Adventure Park, among lots else.
