  • Family park with beach access and a private cove
  • Heated indoor pool, kids' club, leisure centre and solarium
  • Bistro restaurant, takeaway and two shops on site
First-class facilities, access to a beach with private cove, and with views over Wigtown Bay and miles of scenic Scottish countryside: there’s a lot to pick from at this gorgeous and hilly Galloway park, in an area where generations of holidaymakers have escaped to relax and unwind. Guests of all ages will be sorted at family-friendly Auchenlarie Holiday Park: kids’ clubs and family entertainment are on hand for small fry; older kids and teenagers can get competitive at fun-filed The Zone amusement arcade and games room, and all ages can splash safely about in the heated indoor pool, which has a separate area for smaller swimmers. The park’s craft activities will keep mini guests busy as the kids' club organises lots of options from face painting to making their own jewellery. These run in high season, and please note that there may be a small charge for some activities. The Auchenlarie team is also rightly proud of its smart leisure centre, which, as well as the pool, has a solarium for topping up tans, a sauna to relax in, and a fully-equipped gym. Guests can pay as they go for the use of these leisure facilities, or buy a daily or weekly pass on arrival for the park leisure and entertainment. The Surfside bistro has both smashing sea views and a menu of drinks, snacks and meals for alfresco dining on the large terrace overlooking the bay, and the park also has a takeaway dishing up tasty fresh pizzas. A large, well-stocked convenience store has all the bits you need for self-catering, and there's also a smaller shop in the main complex area. Elsewhere, have a spot of free sea fishing (bring your own equipment) down at the private cove during the day, head out to explore the area's fine walking and biking options, or sashay along to the Starlight Suite in the evenings for grownup merriment including live music nights.

A spotless, well-kept site with great facilities, sea views & a lovely beach. Plenty for kids. Some found it hilly, a bit noisy & Wi-Fi pricey. Recommended for families.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The pool, kids club , cafe and restaurant, the lovely beaches , the caravan was lovely an so was the staff , no WiFi but the price we paid for 3 days for all the caravan was reasonable

Disliked The arcade was a complete rip off ! One pound a go for most games and for a couple of tickets that you exchange for sweets or gifts but you need to spend over ten pounds to get a 20pence chew ! The odd ten pence machines but no two pence ones , my grandkids was not happy and neither was the parents handing over all that money for a couple of 20p chews , complete rip off compared to other campsite arcades

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and overall had a lovely stay. It's great to know the caravan and our team made your stay comfortable and welcoming — and that you felt the overall value for your 3-day break was reasonable.

We're sorry to hear about your experience with the arcade. We understand how frustrating it can be when expectations aren’t met, especially when it comes to children's enjoyment and value for money. While the arcade machines are provided by an external provider, your comments are very important to us, and we’ll be passing this feedback on to them directly for review.

We truly appreciate you choosing to stay with us, and we hope to welcome you and your family back again in the future for an even better experience.

Sorry about bad weather.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Great site. Nice location. Pitch was lovely. Facilities clean. Pizza from take away delicious. Never seen so many rabbits in my life - was lovely to see
Would recommend anyone with dog or kids.
Because we had older teenager didn’t really use any of the entertainment options. But if had younger kids could see the appeal.
Lovely beach minutes from site , nice and clean and quiet

Disliked Not much in the form of walks /hikes on foot directly from site.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Lovely to hear you enjoyed your stay with us at the park especially the peaceful location, clean facilities, and of course, the abundance of rabbits (they’re a hit with guests of all ages).

Thank you for recommending us to families with children or dogs it means a lot. We totally understand that entertainment options may be more geared toward younger families, but it’s great to hear you still appreciated the atmosphere.

We also appreciate your feedback about walks from the site. While there are some scenic routes a short drive away due to our coastal location unfortunately there are no options directly from the site.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Fantastic site! Great for the kids lots to do and staff are very helpful.

Disliked It's abit hilly for walking around with breathing issues but this wasn't an issue anyway as I was able to drive around the site and there was plenty of parking available down at the complex and up at the shop.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're delighted to hear that you and your family enjoyed the site and found plenty to keep the kids entertained. It's also lovely to hear that our staff made a positive impression we’ll be sure to pass on your kind words.

We understand that the hilly layout can be a challenge for some, so we're really glad that the accessible parking options helped make things easier for you, the geography of the park can be challenging for some but does give our guests some spectacular sea views. We hope to welcome you back again soon!

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked The site is huge and seems to be well maintained in most areas. Beach area lovely and clean. Showers had good pressure and lovely and hot. Arcades good fun for the kids. Out door play area brilliant for the kids. Evening entertainment good variety.

Disliked Our first night camping we were woken up at various times with drunk adults walking past, singing and shouting.
Second night was even worse as one drunk man fell into our tent were our children were sleeping. He not only scared the hell out of us and the kids he also broke one of our tent poles.
When this was brought up to the lady on reception she did apologise but seemed more fussed about trying to get us to stay at their other site which apparently is a lot quieter but doesn't have the facilities this one does. Having 2 children was the reason we picked this site for the facilities. It doesn't seem there is any park security at night to ensure things like this dont happen. The guy was so drunk and had clearly been drinking on the site bar. He also smashed 2 bottles next to our tent so had obviously been given a carry out from the bar.
Overall really disappointed. We'd stayed in May and had a few issues with people playing music till the early hours but put it down to a one off and rebooked for summer. We really hoped this would be a site we would return to year after year and bring other family members with us but unfortunately after this experience, the kids being scared to death and the fact we will now have to try and buy new tent poles we will not rebook again. Was also told a member from the antisocial team would call and didn't hear from anyone.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are genuinely sorry to hear about the distressing events during your recent stay. Please accept our sincere apologies for the disruption, especially the frightening incident involving your tent and the impact it had on your children.

Your safety and comfort, particularly that of families with young children, should always be a top priority and we deeply regret that this standard was not met. The behaviour you described is completely unacceptable and not in line with the experience we aim to provide. We are currently reviewing our night-time security procedures and bar policies to ensure incidents like this are prevented in the future.

We also apologise that no one from the antisocial behaviour team followed up as promised. This is being looked into internally to understand where the communication breakdown occurred, as we take guest reports of such incidents very seriously.

While we understand your decision not to return, we hope you’ll consider this message as a sign that your feedback is being taken seriously and is prompting real action. If you’re open to discussing the matter further or if you’d like to share any additional details, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We still hold up on our offer to refund the cost of your tent poles, damaged in this incident and express our regret for the experience.

Once again, we apologise for the upset caused and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Local attractions

Trad fans, pop fans, bibliophiles and foodies can indulge their passions easily in the area: many local pubs have regular traditional music sessions and the region has a good handful of festivals of all flavours including the Wigtown Book Festival and Stranraer Oyster Festival. On the music front, tap your foot at the Galloway and Portpatrick folk festivals, both easy to get to from Auchenlarie, or go along to one of the folk clubs which meet regularly in Dalbeattie and Stranraer. By day, dander around the rest of Dumfries and Galloway for a range of things to do like coastal strolling around Wigtown and Luce Bay, fishing, championship golf courses and blossoming at the county’s public gardens and their exotic specimens flourishing in Galloway’s mild climate. Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhins of Galloway is filled with southern hemisphere plants and palm trees; take a hike up the park’s hill afterwards for views to take your breath away over the Rhins to the Galloway Hills. Red deer, wild goats and red kites are a few sights to see in nearby Galloway Forest Park to the north of Auchenlarie, Britain’s biggest forest park at 300 square miles, and with forest trails, lochside cycle paths, wildlife centres, horse-riding and mountain biking all to hand/hoof. The 24-mile Red Kite Trail around Loch Ken is level enough for cycling and has six outdoor viewing points, four hides and a visitor centre with CCTV open in summer; if you’d like to look skywards by night, Galloway Forest Park is the only Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only four in the world. Dazzle your little darlings at the award-winning Creetown Gem Rock Museum, a jewel of an attraction near Newton Stuart with gemstones, crystals, rocks and fossils on display, interactive exhibits and the glow of the Crystal Cave. It’s one of several museums in Dumfries and Galloway including the Museum Newton Stewart, telling the history of the county, and the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries, telling the story of the bard. To see historical sights on site, there are castles, abbeys and vintage buildings all around, such as Cardoness, Carsluith and Threave castles, Dundrennan Abbey, the motes of Mark and Urr, and towers at Drumcoltran and Orchardton.
