Looking up to the farm

General

  • Scenic family-run smallholding site 10 minutes' drive from Largs
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of ferries to Great Cumbrae and Bute
  • Collect and buy fresh eggs from the flock of free-range hens on site

Some will be making a swift stopover on a Scotland tour, others looking to settle in for a lengthier Largs-based break; South Whittlieburn Farm’s owners Katie and Neil are happy to welcome all sorts of guests at their family-run Ayrshire smallholding.

Bag a spot here in the stunning Brisbane Glen to share the place with the horses and ponies that graze the surrounding fields, and a flock of free-range hens that generously provide fresh eggs for guests to collect and purchase for a farm breakfast. If your own animal pal fancies coming along for the ride, dogs are welcome here – the little farm track that runs by Noddsdale Water lends itself well to paw-stretching outings.

Noted those stunning views from the site? (If not, skip off to flick through pics at this point…) They give you a bit of a clue that this is a most scenic area, whether facing inland towards the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park or out to sea and the Firth of Clyde.

Getting down to the seaside is fairly straightforward, as the popular resort of Largs is a 10-minute drive away – home to lots of shops and places to eat as well as a viking centre, boat trips and a splendid seaview golf course.

Lovely welcome from owners. Bathmat in the shower! It’s a working farm - glad to support. Everything was clean and well presented.

    Disliked:

Facilities a bit basic (only one shower and loo) and the pitch on quite a slope. Fine for one night, we were just passing though.
It was hard to find it in the dark - could do with a sign before you get there and more visible signage at the site.

    Disliked:

No advance warning (i.e. a phone call or email) to say that grass Motorhome pitches were water-logged and couldn’t be used (we had pre-booked). They managed to squeeze us in on a parking area but we nearly didn’t have anywhere to stay!

From the manager...

My apologies for putting you on a parking area but as I'm sure everyone is aware the weather has had extremes recently and a huge deluge of rain can put any part of the land under pressure.
We didn't contact you as we knew we could offer you an alternative area and thought that was preferable to having to be towed on and off the grass. If there had been any chance that we couldn't offer you a suitable area we absolutely would have forewarned you!

We have just been at the site for 4 months and for our first season we are very much having to run with it and see what the weather and lands permits! We look forward to making improvements over the winter quiet months and welcoming lots of visitors for 2020.
Kind regards
Katie

Great location, stunning views, friendly owners, nice relaxed atmosphere. Being on a working farm/stables was great for our kids, as they both love horses and dogs. Toilets/showers clean, but due a refurb (see dislikes).

    Disliked:

Toilet/shower block is clean but really needs to be updated to modern standards (we do appreciate that the owners only recently took on the site and are looking to upgrade when time permits).

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review and we are so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. We are totally committed to renewing, replacing the toilets and shower block and hopefully this winter we can get on with this as soon as time and money permits.
We hope we can welcome you back in the future.
Kind regards Katie

Friendly and very helpful staff. All amenities catered for. Basic campsite but very clean and tidy. Great price. Good location to start touring Scotland’s west coast.

    Disliked:

Couldn’t park car next to tent (often due to flooding), means having to carry items to pitch which could be a struggle for some late arrivals in the middle of the night. Toilet/shower block is small and dated. Perhaps consider purpose built porta cabin? To much noise from some other residents after 2300hrs. Think there should be a quiet rule in place as families are sleeping nearby.

From the manager...

Thank you for all your positive comments and we are glad you enjoyed your stay.

We look forward to installing a new toilet and shower block over the quiet winter months and improving facilities.

The weather has been extreme this summer and we have gone from blistering sunshine to flash floods and with being new owners we have been trying to keep the ground as good as possible. We aim to extend the camping area and look forward to offering even more choice of pitches.

We hope to see you back at South Whittlieburn soon.

Kind regards
Katie

Thank you for your lovely review and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

Having just moved into the site in mid April we are keen to refurbish and upgrade many aspects of the site. This will include supplementary drainage and total new shower and toilet block.

Local attractions

Got the urge to flex your golfing arms? As well as the course in Largs, there are several other courses along this stretch of coastline – Royal Troon, Prestwick and Gailes Links courses are all within an hour’s drive. If you’re more into watching sports than thwacking golf balls, aim for Ayr’s racecourse (an hour’s drive away).

Sticking a little closer to home, plan a bit of time in Largs – wandering along the promenade, getting into the viking spirit at the Vikingar Centre or having a bit of splash time in the swimming pool. Just outside town (15 minutes’ drive from the site) is Kelburn Castle, a mural-adorned ancient pile whose estate has a waterfall to hike to, a sculpture trail to stroll along and (shhh…) a secret forest to seek out.

Looking longingly beyond Largs? Board a ferry from the harbour to the island of Great Cumbrae for bike rides and watersports, or head to Wemyss Bay (20 minutes) for the boat to Bute. Either way, keep eyes out for seals and seabirds lounging along the shoreline.

Must see

  • Paisley Abbey (16.4 miles)
  • Scottish Maritime Museum (16.8 miles)
  • Clydebuilt (Scottish Maritime Museum Braehead) (18.7 miles)
