The road to whittlieburn

  • Scenic family-run smallholding site 10 minutes' drive from Largs
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of ferries to Great Cumbrae and Bute
  • Collect and buy fresh eggs from the flock of free-range hens on site
Some will be making a swift stopover on a Scotland tour, others looking to settle in for a lengthier Largs-based break; South Whittlieburn Farm’s owner Katie is happy to welcome all sorts of guests at her family-run Ayrshire smallholding. Bag a spot here in the stunning Brisbane Glen to share the place with the horses and ponies that graze the surrounding fields, and a flock of free-range hens that generously provide fresh eggs for guests to collect and purchase for a farm breakfast. If your own animal pal fancies coming along for the ride, dogs are welcome here – the little farm track that runs by Noddsdale Water lends itself well to paw-stretching outings. Noted those stunning views from the site? (If not, skip off to flick through pics at this point…) They give you a bit of a clue that this is a most scenic area, whether facing inland towards the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park or out to sea and the Firth of Clyde. Getting down to the seaside is fairly straightforward, as the popular resort of Largs is a 10-minute drive away – home to lots of shops and places to eat as well as a viking centre, boat trips and a splendid seaview golf course.

Liked: The whole vibe of the site. Relaxed and friendly. Owners and other visitors were all really friendly and just enjoying their time away. Real mix of families, children and older groups, couples.
Owners were helpful. Site facilities were immaculate and to a very high standard.
Loved our we animal visitors in the camp field (donkeys, mini goats, chickens, lambs and some horses at the fence).
We also really liked the "chuck van" was good to grab some food on the Saturday night save me cooking :) and also for second breakfast on the Sunday.

Disliked: There was nothing we disliked about this site. Friendly, well run and great facilities. Oh and Scottish weather was even nice to us :)

Electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: Arriving on site I got first pick of plots. Traveling as a single parent with child I was anxious but that quickly eased. The views are beautiful. Animals roaming the field where you are pitched was jive for the kids although I did see a few kids who where not very nice to them…shame on those parents not keeping a close eye on there kids. My son did love a little clap of the donkeys. Toilet facilities are decent, shower cubicles seperated from toilet area and was never an issue getting a free shower. Staff were very kind. On arrival we were offered some fresh goods (milk, eggs, orange juice and apple juice) I did take an apple juice and it was very fresh and tasty. Over the weekend there was a can that made fresh foods which neighbouring campers mentioned it was very good. Forgetting bread I did go buy rolls which where tasty for a bbq sausage. TIPS - do take cash as food truck is cash only and if you need to wash hair do take a hairdryer.

Disliked: I couldn’t dislike anything. Family who run this farm have done an amazing job.

Electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked: Cleanliness of the site. Kids loved the animals. Toilets spotless, washroom house tidy. Showers were good. Back bar was a plus but only opened at weekend when we were there. Level pitches and no major issues.

Disliked: No WiFi code, signposts on arrival could have been better. Not much of a check in process.

From the manager: Thank you for the review and so pleased that you enjoyed yourselves!

We have put up new sign for reception which is at the main farmhouse but will look into seeing if more could help.

There is limited Wifi and we are looking at adding a pay as you use system as so many people request it and our small site can't cope!!

I hope we can welcome you again in the future.

Best wishes

Katie and Team SWF

Local attractions

Got the urge to flex your golfing arms? As well as the course in Largs, there are several other courses along this stretch of coastline – Royal Troon, Prestwick and Gailes Links courses are all within an hour’s drive. If you’re more into watching sports than thwacking golf balls, aim for Ayr’s racecourse (an hour’s drive away). Sticking a little closer to home, plan a bit of time in Largs – wandering along the promenade, getting into the viking spirit at the Vikingar Centre or having a bit of splash time in the swimming pool. Just outside town (15 minutes’ drive from the site) is Kelburn Castle, a mural-adorned ancient pile whose estate has a waterfall to hike to, a sculpture trail to stroll along and (shhh…) a secret forest to seek out. Looking longingly beyond Largs? Board a ferry from the harbour to the island of Great Cumbrae for bike rides and watersports, or head to Wemyss Bay (20 minutes) for the boat to Bute. Either way, keep eyes out for seals and seabirds lounging along the shoreline.
