  • Holiday park one mile from the beach in Swanage
  • Half an hour's drive from Monkey World and Durdle Door
  • Visitor information, shop and takeaway on site; dogs welcome
Three cheers for this one on Dorset's Jurassic Coast: Herston Caravan and Camping is a family-friendly site only five minutes' drive away from the town of Swanage and its sandy beach. Everyone should find a full programme of stuff to do and see in this neck of the woods: perhaps rides on the steam-powered Swanage Railway, windsurfing down at Swanage Bay or clifftop walks on the South West Coast Path. The popular attractions of Corfe Castle, Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door are all under half an hour's drive away too. Facilities on site include a mini market that also functions as a visitor information centre, and a takeaway for grabbing food when you're hungry. The spacious and clean toilet blocks have plentiful hot showers, family bathrooms, disabled facilities and washing-up areas. Dogs are also welcome at the park as long as they are kept on a lead and cleaned up after.

What customers say

Great spot near Swanage, friendly staff, and top-notch clean loos and showers (though a bit dated for some). Food van and bar are a hit. Pitches can be cosy, but plenty of space for others. A bit of noise now and then when it's packed.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Spacious pitches, the location was 10/10. Swanage only a 20 min walk, nice pubs within a short walk, steam train station a short walk also. Surrounding area perfect for dog walks. Plentiful showers etc - however cold water.

Disliked First half of the park felt run down, entered to a building site - however heard they’ve got big plans for this. Showers had no hot water - refreshing for us as adults but can’t imagine this would be ideal with children. No hand towels / driers in any toilet facilities. Toilet / shower facilities could’ve been cleaner. Currently no shop on site, however takeaway van has big menu. No bar.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The position and walk to Swanage beach was great. The toilets in the main block and most of the showers good standard

Disliked The pitches were overgrown and close to each other. The shop was non existent
Night of fireworks loud music going on at cafe / bar way after midnight which overplayed the fireworks and prevented the kids from getting to sleep

Electric grass pitch

Liked Walking distance to town and seafront.

Shower room was clean, water temperature lovely.

Disliked We stayed in the seaview field.
Lack of facilities considering the site was HUGE. One toilet cubicle in men's toilets, no urinals which meant queuing every time.

Quite a distance to walk to wash up, no plug, so I felt i wasted a lot of water.

No recycling bins.

Initially, someone was in our pitch so we had to return to reception. We asked for a shaded pitch but we're told they were reserved, no one came and took these whilst we were there. Pitches were small considering the size of the field!

Facilities are advertised on website although there were either few spaced out or not available. Laundrette and shop were closed.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly & helpful staff.

Disliked The site had an unloved appearance needed a spruce up.
The rubbish bins were full & smelly!
As you arrived at the entrance there was a building site cordoned off, looked scruffy & univiting.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Spacious pitches.
Toilet block we used was clean and looked new.
Serviced pitch facilities worked well.
Close to Swanage and local facilities.

Disliked Site looks unkempt. Appreciate it's been hot weather and grass is brown but no mowing/weeding or tidying of pitches and site seems to have happened.
Clearly a site with lots of seasonal pitches which is fine but there doesn't seem to be any controls on tidiness so site looks unkempt which is off putting.
Elsan point a long way from visitors spaces and not hygienic, no hose to flush things properly obviously not cleaned regularly.
The building site area is off putting and untidy.

Local attractions

A five-minute drive gets you into Swanage for sandy walks, sandcastle building, splashing about and more serious watersports. To kayak round the cliffs and coves of the Jurassic Coast, make for Knoll beach (10 minutes' drive) or Lulworth Cove (40 minutes) to hire your craft and see the place from sea level. The 630 mile-long South West Coast Path passes through town: pick it up and head eastwards to the Studland and Godlingston Heath Nature Reserve to see the wild and nature-filled Wessex that inspired Thomas Hardy (or hire a steed from the trekking centre for extra historical detail). Going west, the path goes past the splendid sights of Stair Hole and Durdle Door (40 minutes), while descents of varying steepness lead down to quiet and cove-like beaches like Winspit (accessible only on foot from Worth Matravers, 10 minutes away) and Kimmeridge (half an hour). For a spot of time travel, pick up the Swanage Railway for a nine-mile steam trip to Wareham, perhaps stopping off en route for a clamber round the ruins of Corfe Castle (10 minutes). Younger visitors should have a ball among the play barns, pedal go-karts and pettable animals at Salt Pig the Farm - Putlake, five minutes away. Further afield, there are pony rides, deer safaris, tractor trips and bouncy castles at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (30 minutes), and at a similar distance the heavy hardware in The Tank Museum and the charming residents of Monkey World should keep everyone's monkeys out of mischief.
