  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with an orchard, tyre swing and garden toys
Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got seven acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…) That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores. The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to an orchard and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings). Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field. Mobile phone and device charging is available for a small fee. Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

What customers say

Top-rated, family-friendly site. Owners April & Terry are lovely! Clean facilities, spacious pitches. Kids love the play area and games. Great food from Jurassic Pork. Peaceful, beautiful location with eco-friendly vibe. A few found access tricky; one noted wedding noise.

Liked Absolutely wonderful! April and team are so kind and friendly - helpful and make the whole experience amazing

Disliked Unfortunately a bit of noise, but it was a crying baby so absolutely nothing to do with the site, who kindly moved us to make it lessen the noise.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Very friendly and attentive staff who gave us a bag of marshmallows as a welcome gift! They even offered car help when we were having issues. We went midweek and it was quiet. Very family friendly. Facilities were wonderfully kept, clean and well spread out.

Bell tent

Liked Second visit to this beautiful site. Terry and April are amazing and always there to help and provide any assistance or suggestions for the local area.

We were a party of around 14 including several small children who thoroughly enjoyed the campsite. It was helpful bring a small personal site with toys and park for the children to use.

Facilities are exceptionally clean and were monitored by staff on a regular basis.

We look forward to returning again. Thank you April, Terry and staff. Best wishes Lucy & Family.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The greetings from the team upon arrival. Excellent explained all where to go etc, told to drive around and pick a spot, told us the best places for a sunset or sunrise.
The loos, but showers are more adequate for the site, with plenty of them.
Jurassic Pork was a nice touch to have icecream or some breakfast or dinner when during opening hours and buying milk if needed
The sky at night was amazing, toilets never seen so many stars with no light pollution it was amazing to site outside and have a coffee and just look up.

Disliked Only stayed 1 night, so nothing to dislike.

From the manager: Thank you so much for coming to visit. Jurassic Pork is a great partner business and make lovely chips!
We also enjoy the view of stars in the night sky.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The campsite was spacious, and there was a real family vibe when we arrived. There was lots of space for our son to play and ride his bike. We felt safe letting him go to the play area on his own, and had a lot of fun playing on the tyre swing. Everyone followed the rules of being quiet after dark, and it made the whole experience very welcoming. The campsite was busy without being overcrowded.

Disliked The shower temperature could not be changed, and it was too hot for my son to use.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your stay and for writing such a kind review. I’m sorry you found the shower water too hot. We try to set it to industry standard - 37-38 degrees C, and Terry can adjust it up and down for comfort.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The safety of the field for children, they could be free to roam around making friends but always nearby. The children’s bikes, rope swing and little playground. The friendliness of the people and the cleanliness of the site, great showers, sink area and toilets, the nicest we’ve even had while camping.

We enjoyed visiting Charmouth beach for the day and Lyme Regis beach the next day. Campsite was lovely to come back to after the beaches, the children loved it and want to go again.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your lovely review. Char mouth and Lyme Regis are great places to go for fossils, swimming, ice cream and relaxing.

Bell tent

Liked Another fabulous stay at Pilsdon View Campsite, just a night as was all we could fit in this year. We love Pilsdon View Campsite & have been going there for a few years now.
I bring my son who’s 9 by myself & always feel very safe, it’s ideal for my son as not too big so he can go off by himself to play with all the friends he makes!
It is such a well run campsite by the lovely owners April & Terry, they will help out with problems & will suggest places to visit if you’re stuck where to go.
There is lots of space for children to run around playing football etc but also a tyre swing, little park & bikes etc to borrow as well, my sons in his element when we’re there.
There is no WiFi but good phone reception, also no electric hook ups but they have lockers to charge phones for a small charge & ice blocks to exchange.
There is a brilliant food truck where Ashley serves breakfasts in the morning & burgers etc in the evening & also this year supplying Purbeck ice cream which was delicious for pudding!
Showers are hot & toilets kept clean.
We stay in a bell tent which is easier for us as only have to take our beds etc & cooking things but if you take your own tent you always have lots of room around where you pitch, everybody’s not crammed in.
So many lovely places to visit in the area, lots of wonderful beaches & plenty of fossil hunting opportunities!
Can not wait to be back next year & my son is already asking what date are we going to Pilsdon View Campsite next year!!

Disliked Nothing at all!

From the manager: Thank you very much for your visit, and for taking the time t write this lovely review. The bell tents are a favourite, and make set up so easy. Just bring your airbed, sleeping bags and some cooking things.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself. Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum). In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour. Away from the coast, Mapperton House and Gardens is within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.
