General

  • Peaceful site in remote countryside among grassy fields and woodland
  • Less than 10 mins’ drive to North Dorset Trailway walks, cycle rides
  • Firepits, lots of animals and spacious green areas for kids to play

Book a stay at Charisworth Farm for rural roams and animal antics: this site in the middle of the Dorset countryside is home to domesticated creatures ranging from cows, pigs and sheep to chicken, geese and horses – plus lots of local wildlife like deer and birds...

When not getting up close and personal with critters you can rest in grassland among trees at this leafy park, with plenty of space for adults to unwind while the children play. In the local area, walking and cycling can be had on the countryside bridleways – including on the North Dorset Trailway that runs from Poole to Sturminster Newton less than 10 minutes’ drive away.

In the evenings this site’s all about peaceful, quiet times around the firepit (music and parties aren’t permitted) but every May Bank Holiday it gets a little livelier as it hosts the family-friendly charity event Teddy Rocks Festival.

Not here during the festivities? Amusement is still all around: an extreme-sports centre is just over a five-minute drive away for quad biking and paintballing and you can head over to the town of Blandford Forum (around 10 minutes by car) to browse the shops or check out the military communications and fashion museums.

If you’ve not got your fill of cute creatures, even more are at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (20 minutes’ drive) away where you can seeing poorly primates being rehabilitated.

For sandy times instead, the beaches of Sandbanks and Studland are both a 40-minute drive from the site.

Charisworth Farm is a very well laid out camping site. We were very happy with our tent and it was super easy to contact the site owner for help.
We were provided with mattresses rather than airbeds which was a nice surprise.
    A few things to note.
    - There is hot water (and free tea and coffee) in the farm buildings which is lovely.
    - There are limited numbers of barbecues and fire-pits so I would advise you to bring your own cooking equipment and fire-pit if you want to be sure.
    - At the weekends they run a bar and food station in the corner of the field. There is also live music. It does not go on late but it is loudish so if you are hoping for a quiet night it might not be the place for you.
    - There are four toilets on the site, two brick built with a sink, and two portaloos. They are clean and well stocked with loo roll but if it is a busy day you may have to wait for a wee!
    - There are animals... cows, pigs and horses. It is lovely to be so close to them and we had a nice chat with the cows in one of the barns, although it was a bit one sided.
    - Its a great site for going to Weymouth for the day, as well as Monkey World and the Tank Museum.

The set up in the field. Large pitches for privacy. Liked the easy going set up no pressure. Showers were adequate, liked the freezer for ice blocks as well as the fridge.

Tea and coffee set up very welcoming. Liked the trust aspect nice to be in such a relaxed atmosphere for the weekend. If you wanted you could shed the world out for the weekend.

    Loved the setting.

    Disliked:

The actual toilets where clean, and always had bleach and paper. An occasional brush down of cobwebs would be nice. This is only a minor dislike, it is back to basics camping. The washing up area was a little basic. It was well stocked.

We read the reviews and they are not wrong. We stayed for 3 nights and did not want to go home. The farm is very welcoming for all and is set in a fabulous setting. We all loved visiting the cows and pigs everyday and sitting around the provided camp fire pit. The owners are very nice and very very helpful. At night the stars shine so bright as you are in the middle of nowhere, its beautiful. They have showers, toilets and free tea and coffee area. There is free water supply also. We are coming back.

We had a brilliant 3 night stay at 'Charisworth Farm'.
This is an idyllic setting for a short rural retreat, the farm is great, packed with animals and exactly what you would expect from staying on a farm with rustic outbuildings and long country walks.
There are lots of amenities close by, shops restaurants etc, but you do need transport.
The tent was large and clean, certainly big enough to cater for 2 adults and 2 teenagers.
We particularly enjoyed having a fire at night (fire pit provided) and the freedom to wonder around at leisure.
Although somewhat basic, the facilities provided were more than adequate, a couple of toilets & showers, an area to wash up and unusually, tea and coffee making facilities with a fridge, freezer and coffee urn.
Everyone was friendly from the moment we arrived, the BBQ & music on Friday night was an unexpected bonus.
We will definitely be visiting again.

    Disliked:

There was nothing we disliked, however, it would be an unfair and bias review if some constructive criticism wasn't offered.
A couple of additional nice touches would have been:
    1) Hot water to wash up area and maybe an additional sink as 20 tents sharing the 1 sink, considering this also being the only place to wash your hands after using the toilet would be beneficial.
    2) The inclusion of microwave in the tea / coffee area would also be beneficial, particularly for people camping with young children.
I believe the above relatively simple cheap additions would make the site more appealing to guests.

Very peaceful, everything you need provided, large spacious van,(not as young as it used to be but still going strong) very comfortable, clean, warm and dry, in own grounds,(camping in fields closeby, no disturbance whatsoever). Friendly owners and four legged residents. Ideally situated for visiting other areas. We where in the area for a reason so only stayed for long weekend but will certainly return in the future for a longer stay.
I cant comment on hiking in the area but noticed plenty of countryside public footpaths.

Local attractions

Dorset is known for its historic market towns like Wareham, a spot set beside the River Frome. Travel for 20 minutes to reach this destination with its Saxon walls then get out into the countryside at the Blue Pool former clay quarry filled in with turquoise water.

Wimborne’s another town worth a punt: turn up here for the minster and market (25 minutes drive) or travel the same distance to Dorchester for a teddy bear museum, writer Thomas Hardy’s old 19th-century house and the Maiden Castle ancient hillfort.

Poole (half an hour) also has historic buildings to check out, especially in the Old Town with its Georgian houses and at Poole Museum’s medieval Scaplen’s Court. Take boats to Brownsea Island from the harbour for woodland paths from which to see rare red squirrels bounding around.

For old vehicles instead of buildings and wildlife, The Tank Museum in Bovington Camp with displays of armoured fighting vehicles is 20 minutes away.
