Route directions

Satnavs will usually try to get you to exit the A30 at Okehampton, but this route takes you along lots of small country roads, so it's better to exit at Stowford Cross. What3words: divider.valuables.shiver

Local attractions

To Roadford Lake first? It makes a nice focus for a walk, with woodland along the water’s edge to explore, but there’s more to it than that. This is a popular activity hub, with all sorts of options for fishing, sailing and watersports including kayaking and paddleboarding. You can hire kit here, take lessons or launch your own craft. For other outdoor activities, pick up the Granite Way cycle path at Okehampton (20 minutes), head out on horseback from Cholwell Riding Stables (half an hour) or pick a woolly companion for a walk with Lydford Gorge Alpacas (25 minutes). Dartmoor National Park (15 minutes) is full of great places to hike or ride bikes; if you need an indoor activity for the kids, try Trethorne Leisure Park (15 minutes). Seeking out history nearby might take you to Launceston Castle (15 minutes) and the National Trust’s Cotehele estate (40 minutes). There are kid-friendly activities like a maze and miniature railway at Hidden Valley (20 minutes); for a more grown-up day out, take a tour of Alder Vineyard (15 minutes).
