  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away
For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east. This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches. Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day. When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked: I thought this campsite was fantastic. Beautiful location, clean toilets, close to Torquay where we went for a meal and a walk. The fire pits you can borrow were great and we roasted marshmallows on it in the evening. My children (7&8) had an amazing first camping trip.

Disliked: There was a large group a few tents away from us. They were partying and playing loud music and singing loudly until 1230/1am in the morning keeping me, my husband and kids awake.

Bell tent

Liked: Stunning Views, good location, good facilities, Alan was super friendly, family friendly site, good communication. Alan text on arrival to say our bell tent was ready and we could arrive at any time, he checked in with us when we arrived to ensure everything was ok. We used the charging lockers, we brought a padlock with us and thought this was such a great idea as needed phones for sat nav etc. It was a lovely relaxing long weekend, the site was nice and quiet. Family friendly, the kids loved the playground, the chickens and the long grass field to play with their toys. Felt relaxed letting them have some freedom. We used the free fire pit which was a nice little extra as usually places would charge for this. We didn’t use the showers as we went swimming at a local leisure centre so can’t comment on the showers but I think there was around 4 cubicals in the women’s. There was plenty of availability on the evening; I think the mornings were busy as you would expect.
We came down a VERY steep hill on arrival which some cars would struggle with but there is another route in and out of the site which is much more accessible so would recommend looking into that. Nearby there’s a Sainsbury’s,(fuel) Asda, McDonald’s, Greggs. We was about 10 mins from torquey. We ventured to Brixham (30 mins) and Babbcombe (10 mins) we did the cliff railway which was lovely. We did the coastal walk parked at daddy hole car park and walked to see London Bridge Arch which I would recommend. Loads to see, we will be back in the summer to check out Paignton and other areas as we ran out of time to explore but this was a great base. We would book the bell tent again as was a lovely experience and was nice to arrive and the text be set up and ready

Non-electric grass tent pitch (small)

Liked: Pretty easy to find, lots of toilets and showers, which is rare, and they were very clean! Impressed with that in general. A nice little area to buy logs and a useful mini shop in the mornings.

Good bin area too with space to put your hot ashes from campfires which is ideal and always a bonus. It’s a well kept field and only 10mins drive to Torquay and some other wonderful beaches. The views across the field for sundown are also lovely! Generally peaceful, a play area for kids, and spaced out enough for your own little area. It’s a nice place to be.

Disliked: It’s a hilly, small field, so pitching on a flat area is hard if you’re one of the last to arrive. Be prepared to walk around trying to work out where you won’t roll down in the night.

Also if you arrive in the evening there’s a high chance no one is at reception, and there’s a few signs that say the opposite of each other. In short though, just pitch up and sleep the night and in the morning pop into reception to say you had a booking on pitch up and it’s all good.

Liked: Really friendly staff who went above and beyond.

Lovely traditional campsite with toilet/shower block with great showers (a little bit small but hot and powerful).

Beautiful views, even in the rain. Stunning sunset when it wasn't raining. The site is Nnt to far away from the seafront, with great restaurants and lovely walks. Then 30 mins to haytour.

Disliked: Nothing to mension

Local attractions

For stuff to do nearby, try a visit to the historic village of Cockington, three miles away, where there's a manor house and a cricket ground plus some 16th-century thatched stone cottages and a traditional pub serving cream teas. The award-winning caves of Kents Cavern – once home to prehistoric humans – are also within easy reach of Treacle Valley; this subterranean network lies close to some spectacularly scenic coastal areas with several walking routes along Torbay's UNESCO Global Geopark – one of only seven in the UK. A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village. Take the kids on an animal adventure at Paignton Zoo (20 minutes) or visit the seaside towns of Torquay (15 minutes), Paignton (20 minutes), Brixham (half an hour), Shaldon (15 minutes) or Teignmouth (20 minutes) for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
