  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm shop and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

What customers say

A lovely, rural spot with grand views. Guests loved the clean loos, the grand owners, and the grub. Pitches can be a bit sloped or stony, and you might hear cars now and then, but most reckon it's a grand place for a chill break.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The site was lovely great views facilities and pitch sizes. Owners are lovely and the swallows nest is fantastic

Disliked Unfortunately there was a group of 4 tents all together and they had music blaring for 8.5hours despite owners and people asking them to turn it down still they carried on. It did mean we didn’t have a peaceful stay which was a shame

Electric grass pitch

Liked The owners tried to find a suitable place for us to set up. They were very friendly.

Disliked Picture is nothing like the run down nature of the farm. It definitely wasn’t for us. As I’m disabled the pitches were uneven and the walk to the toilet block was very steep.
We turned round and found somewhere else

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Another lovely stay, nice pitch behind the big field was good to be tucked away.

Disliked Might be an idea to have a toilet block further up the field can be a bit of a walk in the dark

Electric grass pitch

Liked Not much to like here.
Poor site.

Disliked The site was run down and terrible.
Being placed next to a disused caravan on a hill. No view of anything.
Very noisy.
People arriving back at midnight with crying babies and dogs barking.
Pretty strong smell of weed over the fires.
Facilities are very poor. Not many of them and next to some very grumpy caravans of people that live on the site.
Very rough around the edges.

We were greeted with quite a rude lady.
When we asked if we could have a flat pitch we were told the pitch is as flat as it’s going to get.

I would not have eaten in the cafe shop. And would question if it has been pest proofed and has any food rating.

The WiFi was poor and I watched some tv using my 4g.

Location wise nothing else at all is near.

Apart from that it was great!!

From the manager: Good morning.
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay here, although it seems not the right site for you.
When selecting pitches we assess what is available for each campers needs and to this end we try to space the dogs out, including yours, give shade etc and this was what was available for your one night stay here.
The only persons living on site are ourselves with all caravans being enjoyed for holidays/weekend breaks.
Thank you for your comments, we aim keep a well run site and farm with a high number of returning campers/glampers, and feel for whatever reason in this instance your opinion was way off the mark .

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We enjoyed the tea rooms/restaurant and had a lovely cream tea and spent some time there in the evening. It was a large site with plenty of space. The facilities were a good standard with communal fridge, freezer and microwave. Plenty of plugs to charge devices and large washing up area. The showers and toilets were good. (Don’t forget your shower gel as the walk but up is annoying to do over and over 😂)

Disliked We were pitched up next to a rope swing and as a group with no children it probally wasn’t the best place for us, it was very loud late at night and early in the morning, if this would effect you I would ask to be away from it in booking notes.

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
