Surf’s up pretty much any time along this stretch of coast – Croyde’s famed for it. Experienced wave riders can do their thing at the beach 10 minutes’ walk away, or check out the conditions at Putsborough beach (five minutes’ drive north) or Saunton Sands (10 minutes’ drive south). Kit hire can be had on site, and there are several instructors in the village if you need a hand to get on your feet. Skip the surf and there’s still plenty to keep you busy: activity centres in Croyde are ready to sort coasteering, sea kayaking, beachy horse rides and climbing, and there’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away. Stretching your legs on a stroll to Baggy Point (half an hour on foot) is a fine idea too. If you can locate the car keys, you may like to plan an arty afternoon at Broomhill Sculpture Gardens (half an hour), sea safaris, diving and fishing from Ilfracombe (20 minutes) or kid-pleasing trips to the Big Sheep theme park or Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (both 35 minutes or so).
