  • Peaceful sea-view site 10 minutes' walk from Croyde beach
  • A 10-minute walk to Croyde village; 15 minutes' drive to Woolacombe
  • Wave condition reports on site; wildlife boxes and re-wilding area
Of all the activities one could fill one’s time with on holiday, it’s likely that sitting in traffic jams won’t figure terribly high up on the list. Park up at Cherry Tree Farm Campsite and you can chuck the car keys away for a bit, for this Croyde site is in prime position for driving-free Devon days. Getting out and about on foot is a cinch from here: having glimpsed the sea from the site, wander to the beach in around 10 minutes for surfing or swims (all watched over by trained lifeguards), or hit the coast path for walks to Baggy Point and beyond. It’s a 10-minute stroll to the village’s pubs, cafés and shops too, and plenty of activity providers that can set up days of coasteering, bike hire and other seaside goings on. Cracking coastal views lend themselves well to peaceful stays, and that’s a vibe that the site owners are keen to maintain with their respectful requests to keep the hubbub down to a gentle hum, with no noise at all after midnight. Partly that’s to keep the peace for other guests, and partly to avoid disturbing the wildlife – kestrels, barn owls, tawny owls and bats are among those that call this area home (and you might just spot them if you settle down quietly for a while). Wildlife boxes are installed across the site, and there's also an area that is being re-wilded; they are growing meadows, moving in resident bee hives and planting over 1,000 trees. Backing up that easy-life atmosphere are a bunch of handy facilities on site: smart shower/toilet blocks, recycling facilities, ice pack hire and exchanges and power bank rentals. The site is dog-friendly (as long as they're kept on leads), although you may want to take note that Croyde beach is not dog-friendly for part of the year.

Local attractions

Surf’s up pretty much any time along this stretch of coast – Croyde’s famed for it. Experienced wave riders can do their thing at the beach 10 minutes’ walk away, or check out the conditions at Putsborough beach (five minutes’ drive north) or Saunton Sands (10 minutes’ drive south). There are several instructors in the village if you need a hand to get on your feet. Skip the surf and there’s still plenty to keep you busy: activity centres in Croyde are ready to sort coasteering, sea kayaking, beachy horse rides and climbing, and there’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away. Stretching your legs on a stroll to Baggy Point (half an hour on foot) is a fine idea too. If you can locate the car keys, you may like to plan an arty afternoon at Broomhill Sculpture Gardens (half an hour), sea safaris, diving and fishing from Ilfracombe (20 minutes) or kid-pleasing trips to the Big Sheep theme park or Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (both 35 minutes or so).
