  • Off-grid yurt for two in a spacious and secluded Kent field
  • Hever Castle and Chartwell 10 minutes' drive away
  • Woodburning stove and barbecue provided; a mile to pub and shop
Spacious, secluded and sustainable are the watchwords at The Montreal Estate, where a single off-grid yurt sits in its own field surrounded by sweeping views of the splendid Kent countryside. If you're looking to step away from the trappings of 21st-century life and reconnect with the natural world, this is the place to do it. Out here you’ll feel well away from urban settlements – although Sevenoaks is in fact only a 10-minute drive away for handy shops, pubs and public transport connections. With no neighbours in your field you’ll be able to soak up all the joys of outdoor life, from the long-ranging views to the sounds of the local wildlife. Getting out to see your surroundings more closely should be easy enough as well – from the yurt you can get out onto a network of walking trails that crisscross the countryside, or hire e-mountain bikes to help you tackle the hills more easily. The village of Ide Hill is about a mile away with a friendly pub and a well-stocked community shop. With all this fabulous nature around, it’s no wonder the owners of this site are keen to preserve the environment. With that in mind, they’ve set up the yurt with eco-friendly aspects such as a compost toilet and off-grid shower, and provided a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy. There’s no electricity to the yurt but you’ll have a cool box to stash your food and drink supplies in, and a firepit/barbecue to cook on. Cooking kit, towels and bed linen are all provided, so you’ll be able to travel light if you wish.

Local attractions

You’ll be within the Kent Downs National Landscape here, so it should be easy enough to find somewhere to have a nice walk nearby. About five minutes' drive away are Bough Beech Reservoir, National Trust - Toys Hill and the flower-filled pathways of Emmetts Garden, and the Greensand Way passes close to the village of Ide Hill if you’d like a longer ramble (the whole thing stretches to 108 miles…) If you’ve got National Trust membership, you’ll be able to make good use of it around here with outings to Chartwell (10 minutes), Knole (15 minutes) and Ightham Mote (20 minutes). Hever Castle & Gardens (10 minutes) and Leeds Castle (35 minutes) are also fairly local to continue your tour of historic buildings. Sticking to the outdoor theme instead, stop by at Riverhill Himalayan Gardens (15 minutes) or head to Tonbridge (20 minutes) for boat trips and paddleboard hire. If you like a tipple or two, trips to The Mount Vineyard (20 minutes) and Greensand Ridge Distillery (25 minutes) could also be on the cards.
