Lakeside site surrounded by trees

General

  • Lakeside site in rural Essex
  • Waterskiing and banana boat rides; playground and picnic areas
  • Five minutes' drive from the village and pubs of Halstead

Laze by the lake at this luscious leisure park, a private and family-run site in rural Essex. Gosfield Lake Resort, five minutes' drive from the village of Halstead, is surrounded by fields and woods and set up for families to have fine outdoor times; in the evenings, as the sun sets over the 68-acre lake a fab array of birdlife can be seen feeding and settling down for the night – who needs a TV…?

You're welcome to barbecue your bangers (as long as barbecues are off the ground and you don't harm the grass) at the many lakeside picnic spots and there's also a handsome menu on offer in the adjoining café overlooking the water. The simple but well-kept amenities on site include a laundry, a washing-up area, toilets and hot showers, and if you're staying with kids you'll no doubt note the playground, sandpit and family washrooms too.

It's up to you how much you want to do here, and how fast. Gaze at the changing light on the water over a long summer picnic, or take a stroll around the lake… or head onto the water for more active thrills, like waterskiing and banana boat rides (book ahead, everyone wants a go).

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Facilities/activities including Water-sking and banana rides are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Swimming in the lake is not permitted.

The Appletree café is not owned by the site, which has no control over its opening hours.

Extremely nice site. Large well demarkated pitches. Very tidy, immaculately maintained, beautiful scenic lake, fun watching the water skiers even if not taking part. Great play area for keeping kids amused.

    Disliked:

A minor thought but it would be nice to have another toilet closer to the tent pitches, esp with young kids.

Quiet tent pitches at far end of lakeside outdoors centre well away from chalets, caravans and daytime activities. Clean shower block and clothes washing facility open to all users. Site was very quiet when we visited, though we arrived late and left fairly early. On-site public restaurant much appreciated. Recommended.

The site was very clean and everything there for a great weekend with the family. Was so impressed with one of the staff asking for noise to be reduced by a group camping around 11pm so we could all get a good nights sleep. Will be returning for sure. Only advice I would give is if you are planning to do any water sports for the family book them in advance and if you have kids who use WIFI there is very limited service.

Local attractions

The village of Halstead is a five-minute drive away; a pretty spot with a couple of fine old pubs (and grub) and supermarkets for stocking up. Just outside the village, Broaks Wood is a fab 62-acre ancient woodland site that's been around since the last Ice Age: wander the trails spotting wildflowers, bats and newts.

You're well placed to link up with the Essex Way for bigger walks – it stretches from Epping Forest to the coast at Harwich but you're under no obligation to do the lot. Walkable sections give you a flavour of what this cracking eastern county has to offer, from thick forests to river valleys, old churchyards and leafy lanes.

Between the villages of Bures (30 minutes) and Manningtree (50 minutes), there's also Dedham Vale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the banks of the River Stour. There are excellent bike trails and footpaths through the area, and at every turn a scene that Constable could have painted.

For a contrast to all that rural peace, head an hour or so to Clacton-upon-Sea for traditional beachside jollies. Jellied eels on the pier, rides on the funfair, poking round the rockpools with a net on a stick… old-school seaside shenanigans are still a hoot in these glitzy modern times.

Must see

  • East Anglian Railway Museum (7.4 miles)
  • Colchester Zoo (11.8 miles)
  • Colchester Castle Museum (13.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Paycocke's (6.0 miles)
  • Coggeshall Grange Barn (6.4 miles)
