Pitches with a view

  • Small and peaceful family farm site with views of the Yorkshire Dales
  • A 20-minute drive to the Lake District and Arnside & Silverdale
  • Walks from the doorstep; shared cooking area with gas cooker
Surrounded by craggy views and hikes from the doorstep, Shepherd’s Crag Glamping is a peaceful sort of place – and it's kept that way by only having a handful of guests at any one time to stay at this lovely site surrounded by the gorgeous Cumbrian countryside. Feel free to be as active or as lazy as you like here – if you choose the latter there are views of the Yorkshire Dales and Ingleborough to accompany any mid-afternoon chats or naps, plus evenings by the barbecue or firepit. What might a day go like here? Once you’ve rolled out of the hay and rustled up something to eat using the shared gas cooking (with washing-up facilities and ice pack freezing also available), you might want to head to the rear of the site. From there, it’s a short walk to the Hutton Roof Crags, Newbiggin Crags and Farleton Knott, which together have far-reaching views of the Lake District and the sea (this area is a hot walking, hiking, climbing and mountain biking spot, by the way). Shepherd’s Crag Glamping is on a family farm, and guests have access to simple facilities like charging points, two composting loos and hot showers (as it’s such a small site, there should never be too long to queue). Plus, all the pitches are carefully positioned to give you your own space and privacy while still taking advantage of the great views. When you’re ready to get into the role of intrepid explorer, the Lake District National Park is 20 minutes’ drive away, as is the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Yorkshire Dales are 25 minutes’ drive away too.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Absolutely perfect stay. Beautiful quiet & small site, very eco friendly, stunning views & Joe the owner was so lovely, very friendly. Good phone reception & very clean. Loved watching the lambs in the field & the ponies on the crag. Even had the site to ourselves on our last night. We'll definitely be back.

Disliked Only thing to dislike was when it was time to come home.
Also, would have been nice to have a hot shower.

Will definitely be booking again!

Shepherd's camping pod

Liked Absolutely beautiful spot for camping. Surrounding hills and the lack of light pollution made it incredible for star gazing. We stayed in the little pod which had everything you needed and nothing you didn’t! Use of kettle and little camping stove plus a double bed what more do you need!
Facilities such as showers, self composting loos and communal fridge made our stay fantastic, very clean and fully stocked with saw dust and loo paper! Met one of these owners, Joe, who couldn’t have been more helpful! What a dude!
Cannot wait to go and stay again!

Disliked Nothing we didn’t like. Great little site

Fantastic site to get away from it all.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful setting, amazing views, lovely and quiet site. Toilets and shower were really nice. Hats off to being so eco friendly. Communal kitchen with gas burners was super handy when our gas ran out! Loved having the crags as you walk out of the site for some great walks. Can’t not mention the super friendly Rough fell sheep who greeted every morning! The site is really well situated for the lakes and the dales, will definitely be back.

Disliked The farms track and the roads approaching the farm can be a bit tricky. Obviously not a negative for the site but just something to be mindful of when visiting.

2 bedroom safari tent

Liked Loved the safari tent and location. As 2 friends travelling with 2 dogs we like to have our own bed. The beds were super comfy and the space inside was perfect with awesome views of the valley from our porch. We weren't as keen on the eco toilets. Although clean the smell was gag inducing. Not sure about the showers, I managed one stone cold shower as could not get the hot water to work.
Loved access to the walks behind the campsite. I always look for sites with access to walks for the dog. The geology with its limestone paths was really interesting.
A heater in the tent would be good as it did get quite chilly at night.

Lovely campsite. Friendly hosts. Beautiful views and great walks.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Peace and quiet. The stunning locale

Disliked A little expensive for a solo traveller, but to be honest, most places are like this. You pay for the pitch, not the number of guests.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked We had a lovely weekend in the sunshine at Shepherd's Crag. We liked that it was a small site and sustainable. Joe was helpful and friendly. The views were amazing and it was great to be able to walk from the site up onto the Crag and across Hutton Roof. We would definitely stay there again!

2 bedroom safari tent

Liked We stayed in the new safari tent and had a lovely weekend :) The tent was a lovely set up, nice and clean and had all of your basics. The campsite is great with everything you need on a back to basics site, also facilities are easily accessed because there’s only a few pitches on the site so not too many people using them. Thank you for a lovely weekend :)

2 bedroom safari tent

Liked Gorgeous views from the safari tent which was well equipped and set up lovely! Really enjoyed our stay on the quiet campsite. Remember your warm clothes as we found it a little chilly in the tent as there is no heating like some other glamping tents may have, however lovely and cosy in the comfy beds! The showers were clean and powerful. This was our first time using composting toilets which were kept clean although they did smell occasionally we wouldn't say this put us off our visit. Unfortunately somebody must have been smoking in the toilet and that smell for us was far worse. We would recommend this campsite to others and would love to come back! The children loved the oppertunity to see the live stock and it was lovely to wake up and see the sheep so close.

Local attractions

Ramblers’ biggest dilemma might be deciding upon which place to head to first. Straight to hikes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (25 minutes’ drive), where some goals might be to hike the Three Peaks or track down waterfalls like Ingleton Falls, Janet’s Foss and Aysgarth Falls? While you’re holidaying here, it might seem like there’s no end to the characterful villages and historic towns. Take Kirkby Lonsdale (15 minutes), for instance, with its independent shops and eateries, 14th-century bridge and Ruskins View over the Lune Valley. There are pretty views all over the place in the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) too. The two coastal villages are packed with hiking trailheads, ice cream shops and fish and chips shops. Over in the Lake District National Park (20 minutes) there are hikes such as The Langdale Pikes (55 minutes) and pretty towns like Bowness-on-Windermere (half an hour) and Grasmere (50 minutes). Those with a sweet tooth might appreciate Grasmere’s tasty gingerbread, while Wordsworth readers can visit a museum on his life.
