  • Single glamping unit at a farm in the northern Lake District
  • A 20-minute drive to Penrith or Keswick; walks direct from farm gate
  • Cosy self-contained timber pod with private bathroom and mini kitchen
Seeking a comfortable spot well away from the crowds? You’ll certainly find that at Mosedale End Farm, where a single self-contained unit is set up in its own corner of a Cumbria farm yard about 20 minutes’ drive from Penrith. This solid timber pod makes a cosy base from which to explore the northern end of the Lake District National Park, whatever the season or weather. It’s fully insulated and has underfloor heating and double glazing to deal with cooler days. For warmer times, settle at the outdoor table to take in the views out over the valley and surrounding fields – you can hire a barbecue to help with alfresco meals if you like. Much of what you’ll need for an easy outdoor break is provided here – the pod has its own ensuite shower room with toilet (with towels supplied), and it’s also got a mini kitchen for prepping basic meals. A double bed will be made up ready for arrival, and there’s also a sofa bed that’s suitable for a couple of kids in sleeping bags if you’re bringing the family (please note only children aged 6 or over are allowed here). This is a properly peaceful rural location where you’ll be able to relax in quiet surroundings and take advantage of the lack of light pollution to spend a bit of time stargazing. Walks are easily achieved right from the gate too – Carrock, High Pike, Blencathra and Calva are among the options nearby. That’s not to say you’ll be totally removed from amenities though, as it’s only a couple of miles to the local pub – and you’ll also be well placed for days out around northern lakes including Ullswater and Derwentwater.

Local attractions

Once you’ve taken a wander on the local fells, set off for some of the Lake District’s other activities – perhaps a walk to Aira Force waterfall (20 minutes’ drive), climbing, kayaking and archery at Newlands Adventure Centre (25 minutes) or a treetop trail at Whinlatter Forest’s Go Ape park (25 minutes). There are also underground adventures at Honister Slate Mine (40 minutes), including tours and via ferrata climbing routes. For something a little gentler, stroll around Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens (20 minutes) and Lowther Castle & Gardens (half an hour) or head to Keswick (20 minutes) for boat trips and a visit to the Puzzling Place. The Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour) is another good option – or, if you’re travelling without the kids, maybe you’d like to reward all your hiking efforts with a tour and tipple at The Lakes Distillery (25 minutes).
