  • Small, friendly rural site a mile from Broughton-in-Furness
  • A 15-minute drive from Coniston Water and 20 minutes from the coast
  • Simple pitches with splendid views and easy access to walks
In a secluded spot on the southern side of the Lake District National Park and roughly halfway between the coast and Coniston Water – even the most demanding of visitors would have to admit that this is a pretty cracking Cumbria setting. Lakeside ambles and seaside strolls alike are easily accessed (with a drive of less than 20 minutes) from The Barn’s Lickle Valley location, and there are plenty of country trails to ply straight from the site too. Perhaps one of the most rewarding of these is the footpath that runs for a mile into the local village of Broughton-in-Furness, which is home to several pubs, an award-winning bakery and a fab deli and butcher. Not in the mood for any such outings? Stick around and soak up the scenery on site: large pitches have spectacular views of The Old Man of Coniston (that’s a mountain, not a person), and there’s plenty of space to chill out the quiet and fresh air while watching the buzzards overhead. Dogs are welcome to join you but they’ll need to be kept under control as there are working farms all around and often sheep grazing in the fields. To preserve the peace, facilities are limited to fresh water and toilets; there’s no power available but most networks will be able to access mobile phone signal on site. Parking isn’t allowed by the pitches but there’s plenty of parking and wheelbarrows are available to help trundle your kit along (and someone will usually be on hand with an ATV if you need extra help).

Local attractions

First-time Cumbria visitors will no doubt want to tick off several of the area’s big sights, and that’s pretty straightforward from The Barn. Start with Coniston Water (15 minutes’ drive) for scenic lakeside walks and dabbling in watersports, then travel a few minutes further to hike to the top of the Old Man of Coniston. Beyond that, Beatrix Potter’s old haunt Hill Top (35 minutes) is a popular place to visit, as is Sca Fell (45 minutes) – the second-highest mountain in England, no less. The market town of Ulverston (25 minutes) is another place to add to the list, whether you’re stopping by at the Laurel and Hardy museum or stepping out on the 70-mile Cumbria Way. Sprinkle a bit of heritage into your scenic outings by heading to Swinside Stone Circle; if wildlife’s more your thing then there’s plenty of birdwatching to be done at RSPB Hodbarrow nature reserve (both about 20 minutes away). More family-friendly visits might include Cumbrian Heavy Horses (15 minutes) and the shiny vehicles of the Lakeland Motor Museum (half an hour).
