View to Coniston Old Man in the far distance

General

  • Small, friendly rural site a mile from Broughton-in-Furness
  • A 15-minute drive from Coniston Water and 20 minutes from the coast
  • Simple pitches with splendid views and easy access to walks

The Barn is a peaceful Cumbria site in the secluded Lickle Valley, on the southern side of the Lake District National Park and 20 minutes’ drive from the coast.

Large grass pitches have spectacular views of The Old Man of Coniston (that’s a mountain, not a person), and there’s plenty of space to soak up the quiet and fresh air while watching the buzzards overhead. The site’s accessed via a private lane, and there’s a public footpath running for a mile to the local village of Broughton-in-Furness, which has several pubs, an award-winning bakery and a fab deli and butcher.

If you’d like to walk further there are plenty of options for hikes and strolls direct from the site; dogs are welcome to join you but they’ll need to be well controlled as there are working farms all around and often sheep grazing in the fields. Looking a little further afield, a drive of around 15 minutes will get you over to Coniston Water, and it’s 25 minutes to Ulverston.

To keep the peace, facilities are limited to fresh water and toilets; there’s no power available but most networks will be able to access mobile phone signal on site. Parking isn’t allowed by the pitches but there’s plenty of parking and wheelbarrows are available to help trundle your kit along (and someone will usually be on hand with an ATV if you need extra help).

Got to the Barn in the pitch black, when we opened the van the next morning the views took our breath away. Amazing, it was lovely and quiet as no one else were there, I just wish we had longer to explore the area. The owners were really friendly and helpful, would love to go back again.

Absolutely beautiful place... particularly because of the peace and quiet as we didn't see another human or car and we were left with a lovely clean portaloo and freshwater canister.... lovely picnic table in a small orchard with the most gorgeous view where we had breakfast. The best place we have stayed so far 😃

Toilet absolutely stank and the flush squirting effluent OUT of the toilet, made me gag. They replaced it when we left.
No showers and hence £35 per night price tag is a bit steep really.
no real space to put up a tent next to camper if needed
A bit out of the way (pros and cons)

Our stay here was fab! It was so picturesque and beautiful setting. The campsite was ideal for what we wanted and right in the middle of the countryside. David and Raggie were so friendly and made our stay wonderful. Great set up with individual toilet for each pitch which was cleaned daily and lots of space around each pitch. It was so good could have camp fires and great David provided fire wood and so easy to sort. Loved being in the middle of nowhere and the peaceful surroundings.

The ground was flooded but we got a text before we’d even set off offering us higher ground to stay on, which we did. We actually stayed on upper Hawthwaite. The campsite was beautiful and someone came to help us park as it was a little slippery. Someone came to check every so often but it wasn’t intrusive. Toilets were clean and it was easy to social distance. A great little break!
