General

  • Small, friendly rural site a mile from Broughton-in-Furness
  • A 15-minute drive from Coniston Water and 20 minutes from the coast
  • Simple pitches with splendid views and easy access to walks

In a secluded spot on the southern side of the Lake District National Park and roughly halfway between the coast and Coniston Water – even the most demanding of visitors would have to admit that this is a pretty cracking Cumbria setting.

Lakeside ambles and seaside strolls alike are easily accessed (with a drive of less than 20 minutes) from The Barn’s Lickle Valley location, and there are plenty of country trails to ply straight from the site too. Perhaps one of the most rewarding of these is the footpath that runs for a mile into the local village of Broughton-in-Furness, which is home to several pubs, an award-winning bakery and a fab deli and butcher.

Not in the mood for any such outings? Stick around and soak up the scenery on site: large pitches have spectacular views of The Old Man of Coniston (that’s a mountain, not a person), and there’s plenty of space to chill out the quiet and fresh air while watching the buzzards overhead. Dogs are welcome to join you but they’ll need to be kept under control as there are working farms all around and often sheep grazing in the fields.

To preserve the peace, facilities are limited to fresh water and toilets; there’s no power available but most networks will be able to access mobile phone signal on site. Parking isn’t allowed by the pitches but there’s plenty of parking and wheelbarrows are available to help trundle your kit along (and someone will usually be on hand with an ATV if you need extra help).

The view, peace and quiet. Friendly owners, short and pretty walk into village of Broughton in Furness.

Pitch cleanliness and disorganisation. Rubbish from last occupants still next to pitch. Dog mess on grass on pitch which unfortunately we had to clean up ourselves. Lack of communication on arrival or offer of any help with anything.

Views from “pitch” were nice and picnic bench on small grass patch.

    Disliked:

Description on pitch up is not clear.
Says hard standing pitch and implies a normal campsite with other pitches etc.
It’s not a normal hard standing pitch that you can put an awning on with rock pegs etc. It is gravel on concrete and in the drive way of a farmers house. It’s not a campsite. Just a patch of land.
There were no other pitches we could see but we shared said drive way with some old boats on trailers.
The toilet was a portaloo - although we did know that there were toilet facilities only.
However the pitch up checklist says “bring an awning” and states “chemical disposal” both of which aren’t really accurate...bring an awning but you will need to tie to rocks and logs and hope for the best. Chemical disposal - no seperate disposal point.
Access to water is basically a walk to the garden of the persons home (this house isn’t lived in by pitch owner).
We paid £25/night to stay here with electric. We have paid less at proper campsites with an actual toilet and proper pitches. Don’t be fooled by pitch up description

Everything ! The views from the pitch are phenomenal and the owners are very friendly and accommodating ! Would definitely recommend and will be booking again next year. The only facilities available are a toilet but they clearly state that on the advert so it would be very unfair to complain about the lack of showers ect.

Absolutely beautiful place... particularly because of the peace and quiet as we didn't see another human or car and we were left with a lovely clean portaloo and freshwater canister.... lovely picnic table in a small orchard with the most gorgeous view where we had breakfast. The best place we have stayed so far 😃

Toilet absolutely stank and the flush squirting effluent OUT of the toilet, made me gag. They replaced it when we left.
No showers and hence £35 per night price tag is a bit steep really.
no real space to put up a tent next to camper if needed

Our stay here was fab! It was so picturesque and beautiful setting. The campsite was ideal for what we wanted and right in the middle of the countryside. David and Raggie were so friendly and made our stay wonderful. Great set up with individual toilet for each pitch which was cleaned daily and lots of space around each pitch. It was so good could have camp fires and great David provided fire wood and so easy to sort. Loved being in the middle of nowhere and the peaceful surroundings.

Local attractions

First-time Cumbria visitors will no doubt want to tick off several of the area’s big sights, and that’s pretty straightforward from The Barn. Start with Coniston Water (15 minutes’ drive) for scenic lakeside walks and dabbling in watersports, then travel a few minutes further to hike to the top of the Old Man of Coniston.

Beyond that, Beatrix Potter’s old haunt Hill Top (35 minutes) is a popular place to visit, as is Sca Fell (45 minutes) – the second-highest mountain in England, no less. The market town of Ulverston (25 minutes) is another place to add to the list, whether you’re stopping by at the Laurel and Hardy museum or stepping out on the 70-mile Cumbria Way.

Sprinkle a bit of heritage into your scenic outings by heading to Swinside Stone Circle; if wildlife’s more your thing then there’s plenty of birdwatching to be done at RSPB Hodbarrow nature reserve (both about 20 minutes away). More family-friendly visits might include Cumbrian Heavy Horses (15 minutes) and the shiny vehicles of the Lakeland Motor Museum (half an hour).
