  • Top-notch Lake District caravan park in 130 acres of ancient forest
  • A 10-minute drive to Ambleside for Windermere boat trips
  • Dog-friendly park with woodland trails, tarn and large play area
If a trip to the Lake District National Park for you means plenty of peace, space and lovely natural views, this is the place for you. A couple of miles from Ambleside, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is set within 130 acres of ancient woodland, providing a top-notch location for a stay in this wonderful part of the world. This location is on the site of a former country house – and while that building is long gone, a few handy replacements have sprung up, including a reception building with a shop and several bathroom blocks with all mod cons (think underfloor heating and hot showers as well as accessible facilities and spacious family rooms). There’s also a building housing a well-equipped launderette (with several washing machines and tumble dryers, plus a drying room) and a library so you’ll have something to read while you wait for your clothes. That launderette may well come in useful, as this is a place that lends itself to getting just a bit mucky – for starters, there’s a fab four-acre open space for the kids to run about and play games, plus a large play area with a zipwire, scramble nets and loads of other play kit. There are also woodland trails running through the grounds, leading to the tarn and nature hide, with red squirrels, woodpeckers and deer to spot along the way. This is a large site, but it’s not a place that ever feels crowded, as pitches have been cleverly tucked away in tree-lined glades around the park, giving each area a cosy woodland atmosphere – just the thing for your peaceful Lake District break.

What customers say

This top campsite gets the nod for spotless grounds, lovely woods, and fab facilities like heated showers. Staff are sound, the shop's a treat, and you can pick your spot. Great for dog walks and exploring the Lakes. A few grumbles about Wi-Fi and being a bit out of the way, but they're looking into access and pitches.

Liked Everything! Beautiful campsite with really nice, clean and modern facilities. The shop is great and has everything you need. The campsite is so peaceful and there’s a lovely woodland walk which was stunning in the autumn. The staff were so nice! Particular mention to the warden this weekend who was helpful, friendly and nice to stop to chat with. Good location

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked We really enjoyed our stay at Skelwith Fold Caravan Park! We were greeted warmly on arrival and given all the information we needed about the site. As it was out of season, we were able to choose our own pitch, which was a lovely touch and made for a really relaxed start to our stay.

The facilities were great — the showers and toilets were very clean, and the washing-up area was well kept too. There’s a bus stop just at the end of the road, making it really easy to get into Ambleside or Hawkshead without having to drive.

The staff were friendly, helpful, and always on hand if we needed anything. Overall, it’s a peaceful, well-run site in a beautiful location, and we’d definitely stay again. Highly recommended!

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked What a beautiful site, all the staff were so friendly and attentive. The site itself is very well kept, clean, and with plenty of space. Having the opportunity of choosing your own pitch was a bonus. WiFi was okay and the toilet block and showers are spotless. It’s one we will be sure to return too.

Disliked Nothing at all.

Electric optional gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Could not have asked for better from Skelwith Fold!! I was travelling alone in bad weather (Storm Amy!) They called me to advise me of road closures, flooding and current weather updates ahead of my arrival. They were so helpful when I arrived late after a terrible journey. The next day my plans were further disrupted by the storm and they went above and beyond to help me to reach the course I was scheduled to attend in Ambleside.
The park was amazing, beautiful, clean, tidy, every facility you could wish for.
Absolutely perfect stay despite horrendous weather!!! Thank you so much for looking after me i will definitely be returning!

Local attractions

As well as having top-notch facilities, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is in a top-notch location for a Lake District break. There are lots of great walks and activities nearby, and staff are always on hand to dish out ideas and tips to help you make the best of it all. Of course you’ll want to see some lakes – perhaps starting with Tarn Hows (15 minutes' drive) before moving on to a steam boat ride on Coniston Water (20 minutes) and a tour of Rydal Water (15 minutes), taking in Rydal Cave and Rydal Mount and Gardens along the way. The big one, of course, is Windermere, just a few minutes' drive from the park and with boat trips available from Ambleside (10 minutes). Around the lake there are various attractions to stop off at, including the National Trust sites at Wray (10 minutes) and Hill Top (20 minutes). If you've got the kids, look instead to places like the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes) and Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (25 minutes).
