  • Small, basic site in the grounds of a well-connected riding stables
  • Direct access to the A189; 20 minutes' drive from central Newcastle
  • Tree-lined site with farm animals; local buses nearby
When you're faced with a choice between the country and the city, this site will have you sitting pretty. Orchard Stables is a family-friendly site in a green spot that's also handily 20 minutes' drive north of central Newcastle. The stables are just off the A189, a few minutes from the A1 and A19 and a couple of minutes' walk from local buses that'll drop you off right in the centre of town. The site is surrounded by trees for a private feel, although due to its excellent road links there is some traffic noise. Orchard Stables is also home to friendly farm animals that you can spot on site (please make sure to keep a respectful distance, and don't feed or touch them). Basic facilities on site include a water supply, flushing toilet and bins (please note there is no chemical waste disposal). For easy eats, there is a wide variety of takeaways, a pub and Indian restaurants a few hundred yards from the site. This spot is close to the culture, food and sport of Newcastle, but it's also quick to get out on jaunts to Northumbrian castles, country parks and the coast. Getting a walk closer to home is also a breeze – a footpath directly opposite the site joins up with peaceful Cramlington Nature Reserve. The site is located on the main bus and road routes with a pub, takeaways and restaurants just around the corner. The local town of Cramlington has many large shops, a cinema and a train station. You will be parked in the horse riding arena, but please note that there will be some road noise. Travelling further afield? Orchard Stables is a great place to stop over on the way to Newcastle, Whitley Bay, Northumberland and its gorgeous beaches. Please note that, for the comfort of the animals and other guests on site, there should be no noise after 10pm. Because of nearby livestock, dogs are not allowed.

Route directions

Follow signs for Northumbria Hospital A & E. At the hospital roundabout do not go into the hospital, but take the road labelled Ashington (B1326). Look for the entrance 80 yards along on the left (just before the flyover/ bridge). You can see the field from the roundabout. (Don't go into a housing estate as sometimes directed by a satnav; the Pitchup location is correct and will take you straight to the site.)

Local attractions

Fly through the woods on a mountain bike or take a slower woodland stroll at Plessey Wood Country Park (10 minutes' drive), a 100-acre wildlife haven with nature walks, riverside meadows and plentiful picnicking spots. There's an art-themed trail here, but those into their sculpture should make a detour to see Northumberlandia (10 minutes), a huge sculpture of a reclining female figure carved out of 1.5 million tonnes of grass and earth. Other stretches of well-maintained turf can be admired (and played on) at Arcot Hall Golf Club (10 minutes). Kids left bemused by the prospect of playing caddy for the day can instead be taken to Mr Mulligan's Newcastle (20 minutes), an indoor miniature golf course with kooky decor. Other family-friendly attractions in town include the Newcastle Discovery Museum and Great North Museum (both 20 minutes). Northumberland stately homes like Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (30 minutes) and Bamburgh Castle (an hour) are also likely to get top marks from visitors young and old, as are boat trips from Seahouses (an hour) out to the Farne Islands National Nature Reserve.
