Orchard Stables: Grassy meadows

General

  • Small-scale park in the grounds of a well-connected riding stables
  • Direct access to the A189; 20 minutes' drive from central Newcastle
  • Tree-lined site with grass and hardstanding areas; local buses nearby

When it's a tossup between the country and the city, this site will have you sitting pretty. Orchard Stables is a family-friendly site 20 minutes' drive north of central Newcastle. The park is just off the A189, a few minutes from the A1 and A19 and a couple of minutes' walk from local buses that'll drop you off for various Geordie japes right in the centre of town.

The site is surrounded by trees for a private feel, although due to its excellent road links there is some traffic noise. It has both grassy and hardstanding areas. Orchard Stables is also home to friendly horses that you can spot on site (please make sure to keep a respectful distance, and don't feed or touch them).

Facilities include a standpipe and a washing-up area, plus handy amenities within five minutes' walk including a fish and chip shop and takeaways. More extensive shopping can be done half a mile away in Cramlington.

This spot is close to the culture, food and sport of Newcastle, but it's also quick to get out on jaunts to Northumbrian castles, country parks and the coast. Getting for a walk closer to home is also a breeze – a footpath directly opposite the site joins up with peaceful Cramlington Nature Reserve.

Please note that, for the comfort of the animals and other guests on site, there should be no noise after 10pm.

Please note

This park has no on-site shower facilities.

Summer sandals and shorts were not a very good mix with nettles growing all around the pitch. Had a sleepless night due to an excessive road noise.

From the manager...

Thanks for the review. We have the nettles along the fence lines (not on the pitches themselves) for the butterfly caterpillars as part of our wildlife programme. I'll look at putting a another fence a foot in to stop people straying into nettles. Always useful to have feedback and I'm glad you found us convenient as a stop off. Thanks again 😊

Handily placed for beaches. Clean. Not family friendly07/20/2021

  • Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

  • Liked:

Owners seemed friendly. The toilet, despite being a portaloo, was clean and functional. Drinking water available. Picnic tables available for eating. Cheap. Good base for Northumberland coast and beaches, especially Seaton Sluice and Blyth.

    Disliked:

The owners can't help that they're next to a dual carriageway. They can't help that there were overnight roadworks on the road next to the site meaning machinery was moving about all night. They can't help that boy racers and drunks were up and down the road until 3am. They can't help that the site is right next to a busy hospital and the ambulances are up and down every 15 minutes with their sirens on. They can't help that they are on the flight path to an International Airport. However, these things should be taken into consideration when deciding to set up a campsite. If the land was a mile away towards the coast none of the above would have been an issue.

The site cannot be classed as family friendly. The tent field was uncut like a meadow with nettles, so children couldn't be left to run around. We also couldn't sit outside our tent or cook outside it due to the long grass. I also received a text within an hour of booking (very helpful messages otherwise) informing us not to touch the fence as it was electric. That would have been fine on a large field, but the tent pitches were in a tiny field (no bigger than two tents could fit) so we were never more than a couple of metres from the electric fence. This upset our children as they couldn't play. Furthermore, the site is listed as having friendly horses which my children were looking forward to seeing. After informing the site owner that one of the horses had escaped the field, my wife was told to stay away as they will bite!

Definitely not family friendly, although would probably suit a motorhome or caravan on a hard standing pitch as you're then away from the electric fence and have a bit more insulation for sound.

From the manager...

I'm so sorry you didn't have a good stay. I have only advertised one tent pitch as people kept asking if we did camping and we have hosted several successfully, but after this review I think we'll just stick to the motorhomes. It does say you will hear traffic on the description and I'm sorry if there was roadworks which was out of my control. I always advise people to enjoy looking at the animals but not to touch, which is for health and safety reasons.

Friendly owner, animals, close to where we were visiting. Owner very accommodating and came out to greet us dispute us arriving much later than planned.

    Disliked:

No grass pitches so really difficult to peg down our awning (we didn’t expect the field to be out of use) we ended up moving our van twice because the hook up points were only in certain areas.

From the manager...

Thanks for the review. Glad you enjoyed your stay and it was convenient for you. Luckily I live on site so was able to greet you even in the dark. We have hardstanding electric and non electric pitches and don't use the grass for motorhomes. You'll need to book a grass pitch if you want to peg an awning. I don't charge for awnings for this reason. However people do manage to put the awnings up by using bricks and stones that are available and fastening to the fences etc. Thanks for the review as it helps people know what to expect.

Local attractions

Fly through the woods on a mountain bike or take a slower woodland stroll at Plessey Wood Country Park (10 minutes' drive), a 100-acre wildlife haven with nature walks, riverside meadows and plentiful picnicking spots. There's an art-themed trail here, but those into their sculpture should make a detour to see Northumberlandia (10 minutes), a huge sculpture of a reclining female figure carved out of 1.5 million tonnes of grass and earth.

Other stretches of well-maintained turf can be admired (and played on) at Arcot Hall Golf Club (10 minutes). Kids left bemused by the prospect of playing caddy for the day can instead be taken to Mr Mulligan's Newcastle (20 minutes), an indoor miniature golf course with kooky decor. Other family-friendly attractions in town include the Newcastle Discovery Museum and Great North Museum (both 20 minutes).

Northumberland stately homes like Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (30 minutes) and Bamburgh Castle (an hour) are also likely to get top marks from visitors young and old, as are boat trips from Seahouses (an hour) out to the Farne Islands National Nature Reserve.
