  • Small adults-only motorhome site in Kielder Forest Park
  • Kielder Castle under a mile away; observatory 10 minutes' drive
  • Serviced hardstanding pitches in the UK's largest dark sky park
There's some really excellent hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching to be done in the Northumberland National Park – but if there's one thing this park is really known for, it's surely the fantastic stargazing. A whopping 572 square miles here have been given Gold Tier status for their incredible dark skies, making this the largest International Dark Sky Park in the UK (and the second largest in Europe). If you're travelling in a motorhome, you’ll be able to take full advantage of these fabulous surroundings at Clear Sky Lodge Park, an adults-only touring site on the edge of Ravenshill Forest and with views over the North Tyne Valley. That setting means the views here are gorgeous by day – but they're potentially even better by night, when the starry displays start up. If you're keen to learn more about what you’re seeing, head to nearby Kielder Observatory (10 minutes' drive) for one of their regular events. And this great location also means you'll have plenty to do by day as well, exploring the trails of surrounding Kielder Forest Park, visiting Kielder Castle and heading down to Kielder Water. You might also like to throw in a day trip to the Roman attractions around Hexham (50 minutes' drive away). Preserving the dark-sky status of this park means that facilities here have necessarily been kept to a minimum, but guests have access to toilets, showers and a chemical disposal point. Pitches all have water and electric connections, and they’re on hardstanding that should be accessible in all weathers.

What customers say

A highly recommended, peaceful spot in Kielder Forest. Lovely, modern facilities and spacious pitches. Fantastic forest views and quiet for stargazing. Great for walks and cycling. Midges noted, but overwhelmingly positive with many wanting to return.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked It's a lovely site in stunning surroundings with level hard pitches. We booked this site due to it's close proximity to the observatory where we were going that evening 9-midnight. We arrived back in the early hours and just sat outside our campervan in awe looking at the stars which was a spectacular sight. It also has free WiFi.
We also loved that it was adults only and was a small site and the toilet/shower block was brand new and was beautifully made and very stylish and was spotlessly clean. Even the soap was Molton Brown and it had a fab washing up area and 2 washing machines which we didn't use as we were only there for 1 night but we will definitely be back. The owners were also very friendly. Highly recommended, it's a gem.

Disliked There was nothing we disliked.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Everything about this site was exceptional.
The 7 spaces for campers were hardstanding large flat areas all with hookups. The toilet and shower block had a washer and dryer for clothing was the cleanest and nicest we've seen.
The main reason we booked this was for the peaceful setting because no music or children are allowed in the camper area.( we like our music and love our kids and grandkids but sometimes it's good to get away 😊)
It's a dark sky area with outstanding views of the Keilder forest.
We met the owners who were really nice people and went out their way to help if needed. Had a beer with Dave who is a very interesting guy. Definitely going back .

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The view was lovely. The toilet, shower and washing up facilities were fantastic. The shower was super hot in a gorgeous little wooden hut. A washing machine and drier available too. The pitch was good size and flat. The site is small for overnight campervans/motorhones to the point you can overhear alot of other people's business without trying. It was tarmac pitch so flat but when you sat outside to have a wine, it smelt of tarmac. Good for 1 night and move on. Beautiful setting.

Disliked Smell of tarmac
Absolutely no signal or WiFi which can be a positive thing, bring a book!

Ideal for mountain biking because there are loads of trails next to it.
The shower/toilet block was immaculate with washing machine available.

Disliked Midges were a bit of a problem because of the warm damp conditions due to a wet day.
Our sat nav struggled to find the site best way is to follow the brown signs to cycle centre.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Amazing spot for a couple of nights.
Fantastic views, beautiful facilities.
Really rustic with lots of lovely little touches in the showers and toilets. Molten brown handwash and lotion. Very nice!
Great pub a 10 min walk away too.
Take midgy repellent and citronella candles for night time , as your in the forest the midges come out to play. If your prepared it's not a problem.
Highly recommend!

From the manager: Thank you Angeline for staying with us and making time to leave a review of our little site which we are pleased to hear you enjoyed.
Yes we can get midges in the evening but that is the reason we have so many swallows, house martins and swifts during the day and bats at night.
Hope you return again shortly.

Would recommend for peace and quiet with excellent facilities.

Liked Small park, nice and quiet with great views. Surrounded by birdsong. Lovely facilities too, so clean and spacious with everything we needed to be comfortable.

Disliked Not really a dislike, but wasn't immediately clear how to check in. We found the 'phone box with a telephone number and the Wi-Fi code, just no one there to check us in. Didn't really matter though.

Local attractions

Given how close it is, your first visit should be to Kielder Castle, just under a mile away. It's got a variety of exhibits about the area’s history and wildlife, a lovely café and a bird hide where you can look out for the resident ospreys. Bikes can be hired here, or you can head out on a scenic drive along the toll road. There are plenty of options nearby for walks, of course – and one of the best is the Lakeside Way, an accessible multi-user trail that runs all the way along the 26-mile shoreline of Kielder Water (10 minutes’ drive). Look out for native red squirrels as you go – Kielder is home to about half of the country's population – or head to the Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre (15 minutes) to see other local wildlife. If you're into mountain biking, you may like to cross the Scottish border to 7 Stanes - Newcastleton (25 minutes); if it’s history that’s more your thing, try heading to Hadrian's Wall to explore places like the Temple of Mithras (45 minutes) and Housesteads Roman Fort (50 minutes).
