Get ready for take off into the Northumbrian countryside from the Brunton Airfield Campsite, 10 minutes’ drive from the sea. The 20-acre site is based on a World War 2 airfield which is now part of a working organic farm. You can unwind in wide open countryside on a spacious site with views towards the sea and pitch up under the dark Northumbrian night skies. Birdwatchers, grab your binoculars… there are many farmland birds to be seen around the site, including skylarks, yellowhammers, goldfinches and barn owls if you have an eye for them. The sandy coves of Beadnell Bay, Low Newton and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are all within a 10-minute drive. Handily, the national Coast and Castles cycle route also passes the entrance to the site. Hire a firepit or barbecue on site (or bring your own); wood and charcoal will be available to purchase on site. Anything else you forgot to pack can be sourced from local shops within a 10-minute drive. When you feel like eating out, take your pick from several pubs close by or a treetop restaurant 25 minutes' drive away (you're sure to spot a bird or two there.)

Local attractions

While the shore is certainly sublime, the seaside has more than just sand and sea. Find local salted or pickled kippers and an art gallery in Craster (15 minutes’ drive) and then challenge yourself to the miniature golf course in the coastal village of Seahouses (15 minutes). Perhaps make a day out of Northumberland Country Zoo (25 minutes) or join it together with a trip to Howick Hall Gardens and Arboretum (15 minutes) for a seasonal nature trail and play area for kids to tumble to and fro. You’ll pass by plenty of turrets on your way around, as castles are a common sight in this area. Why not embark on a Harry Potter-themed dragon quest at Alnwick Castle (15 minutes) or walk into the 14th century at Dunstanburgh Castle (15 minutes)? Perhaps one of the grandest of them all, Bamburgh Castle (20 minutes) has nine acres of grounds, in a contest with the ruined priory and Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island (35 minutes). Decide for yourself which has survived best out of the medieval bricks at Warkworth Castle (half an hour) and the turrets in your wake.
