  • Biker site by a café bar, open since the 1970s
  • Café open daily with weekly and weekend biker meets
  • Sunday roast, weekly carvery and licensed bar
‘Run by bikers for bikers’ goes the tagline of the roaringly popular Squires Café Bar in Selby, North Yorkshire, which has been rallying – and fortifying – biker troops since the 1970s. Bike and club meets, regular events and live music, an on-site bike shop and a once-monthly Autojumble to pick up secondhand bike gear have all been lined up over the years by owners Harry and Sue, who ran the biker-friendly Squires Milk Bar at Sherburn-in-Elmet before moving here. Café prices at Squires are cheap as chips (which you can have with gravy and stuffed inside a giant Yorkshire pud); for something a bit posher, a carvery of the café’s own farm-reared Aberdeen Angus is available for Sunday roast and on Thursday evenings; and for pints/events, a licensed bar and an events room for hire are available too. Squires Café Bar is open seven days a week in summer, but it’s on Wednesdays and weekends that regulars roar up: Wednesdays following the local biker meet tradition started by Harry and Sue in the 1960s, and weekends for meets, charity events, live gigs and general lounging about in leathers. To preserve the grass areas of the site, the owners allow the use of off-ground barbecues, but not one that will damage the grass. Campfires are not allowed.

What customers say

A friendly spot for bikers, with great pitches and food. Praised for atmosphere, but toilets are dated and not always spotless. Train noise and barking dogs are mentioned. Unique vibe, but expect basic facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Big camping field with lots of space. Convenient for where we needed to be.

Disliked The toilets and showers were a bit tired. Flood lights from the car park were rather bright. Could only find one tap and it was a long way from where we pitched.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Just love this place for a local camp. Everything you need - sizeable informal camping pitches ideal for single tents or groups. Dog friendly. On site pub serving great food (huge menu with daily specials and snacks) from 8am until 8pm. Good choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks including milk bar and slushie. Daily free motorbike show (people turning up on their bikes who are all so friendly). Also nicely placed for a walk to Lotherton Hall (about 10 mile round trip by foot). Looking forward to the next trip. There are shops/supermarket a short drive away.

Really love this place, it's such a great place to visit and definitely a destination camp site, once you are there you don't need to go off site. Keep up the amazing work Squires

Disliked Although the shower blocks were cleaned regularly and always stocked up with toilet roll (love that you get a toilet, sink and shower together in a unit - do all your morning business in one private room) they were a bit dated and a bit fusty smelling but don't let this put you off. That said for the price you can't complain, so maybe this should be in the box above and this box should be kept empty as this is a great site to visit

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The staff here are really friendly and helpful. It’s a great place to watch motorbikes come and go, and such a variety. The bikers are very respectful of the place and the guests.
The food is traditional British and very reasonably priced.
You can get a bus into Leeds and back from the gate to the site.

Disliked The pitches are expensive - £25 a night, compared to nearby campsites at @ £14 per night - considering that guests are allocated pitches on what appears to be a random ordering. There is no way to request a quiet spot, away from large families. During my second night there, after 11pm, there was a loud altercation on the site, waking a number of the guests who had arrived solo or without children.
The shower blocks and loos were mostly quite clean, but you did have to be watchful of youngsters riding around the site on small cc or electric motorbikes.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Loved our stay. Friiendly attentive staff first an foremost. Really nice open space. Lots of room for kids to play during the day. It was clean and quite quiet no late night parties from the people in the tents or other caravans. Facilities were decent better than most tbh. It was superb pricing please dont ever change keep getting better!! The site is enough away that you dont here the bikers engines but close enough to go down check them out at the cafe/restaurant.

Disliked That we couldnt stay longer.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Staff were very good in the cafe and opening of the site gate.
Good location for being immersed in bikes.

Disliked Inadequate toilet. Showers and washbasin. When the site is full with campervans, caravans and tents it would not cope.
Other reviews have said the same, I was sceptical reading them, but now agree 100%.
Looking at the licencing for campsites, it varies per local authority. This passage taken from the advisory for setting up a campsite appears to be pretty consistent.

Toilets should be adequately spaced. For sites with up to 120 pitches, there should be 2 toilet facilities for women, 1 toilet facility and 1 urinal for men, per 30 pitches. Depending on your local council regulations, you may be required to provide these facilities per 20 or even 10 pitches.

Adequate provision of wash hand basins must also be made, 2 for women and 2 for men. These should have enough hot and cold water with the supply situated close to the toilets.

With the 75 electric pitches full it wouldn't take many tents to go over this.
The tent field is huge.

This hS the potential to be a superb site, let down by toilrt facilities.

There is also only 1 water tap for the whole field I was in. This would be an easy fix, a tap at each end of the field to supplement the existing one would be much better.

I had my own facilities in my van so none of this affected me.
Would i stay again?
In my van yes

In my tent with my bike, despite loving the cafe and atmosphere, I go at least once a week.
The answer would have to be NO only due to lack of facilities

Local attractions

Squires Café Bar is well placed for the Yorkshire coast and both the Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors national parks, about 10 miles from Leeds city centre and with York within biking distance for a day trip. On fine and sunny days, ramble/bike along, fish from or take a boat out on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the longest in Northern England, or take a picnic to the 1500 acres of parkland at Temple Newsam House and Farm, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots’s caddish hubby Lord Darnley and listed as one of the top three museum sites in the country by an author in the know. Xscape Yorkshire is a nifty nearby option for rainy days or indoor evenings, as it’s crammed with activities such as Laserzone and adventure golf, restaurants, bars, clubs, a cinema and shops (the outlet shopping village Junction 32 is just opposite). Further afield, the Doncaster Dome has a seven-pool waterworld and the UK's only split level ice rink – you’ll have had loads of practice by then at the Squires Café Bar rink…
