General

  • Spacious and peaceful eco-friendly site with scenic countryside views
  • A 10-minute drive from Ripon and 40 minutes from York
  • A 20-minute drive to Lightwater Valley; Europe's longest rollercoaster

Travelling up hills, down dales and across moors? Settle in for hols and pitstops at Venus Campsite, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the A1 and 10 minutes from the North Yorkshire city of Ripon.

Whether sticking around for lengthy stays or taking an overnight pause on travels north or south, this is a top spot to pitch up at. Handily placed between the Yorkshire Dales (35 minutes' drive) and North York Moors (20 minutes) national parks, the site’s a good pick for ramblers, bikers, hikers and riders, and urbanites will be well-placed too with Ripon and York (40 minutes) within easy reach.

The site’s eco credentials should appeal to environmental warriors and worriers too: it’s a recognised eco-friendly site, with plenty of green space to roam about in for guests, recycling facilities for sorting the detritus of getaways, and energy coming from renewables.

Feeling hungry or thirsty? A handful of country pubs serve food within about 10 minutes' drive, lots more options can be tried in Thirsk (15 minutes away) and Ripon, and glasses can be raised at the Black Sheep Brewery within 20 minutes. For self-catered stays, there’s a small grocery store five minutes away, and bigger supermarkets in Thirsk.

Please note that this is a back to basics campsite with simple facilities of flushing toilets and free hot showers – if you're in the market for luxuries like underfloor heating you'll probably need to look elsewhere.

When we booked into the Venus site, a big consideration was the eco-friendly label given to it on Pitch up. It states on the site that “the site’s eco credentials should appeal to environmental warriors and worriers too: it’s a recognised eco-friendly site, with plenty of green space to roam about in for guests, recycling facilities….”
Pitch up followed up my visit with email requesting feedback so - I feel I need to challenge the descriptor on the website with what I saw when we stayed at Venus.
I understood that being eco-friendly means being designed to have little or no damaging effect on the environment? Not so here.
The only recycling on site was a glass bin. Everything else had to be put into a general waste bin. No paper/cardboard recycling. No opportunity to recycle plastic or cans and no compostable waste facilities. We took our recycling with us when we went into Thirsk and again when we left to return home.
There was no evidence of the site being supplied by wind turbine or solar power.
From what I could see, none of the lights in and around the toilet area were low power LED and were left on all night. Very limited use of PIR (Just in toilet cubicles.) There was a large domestic fridge freezer under a car-port type shelter that was running 24 hours a day. In all the time we were on the site, it was unused.
I asked if we were required to use the Green environmentally conscious cleaner for our chemical toilet and was told not to bother! None of the considerable amount of cleaning chemicals and hand cleaners in the toilet block were “green.”

From the manager...

Hi Steve
Unfortunately you have missed the free guided tour at the main house showing the solar panels and battery back up storage which supply the caravan site, but have now put the pictures on the gallery for all eco warriors to see and admire.
The fridge is set to eco in winter to stop the gas from settling.
All light bulbs in and around the toilets and showers are LED or low voltage.
Due to the very minimum caravaners in winter, yes all waste goes in the same bin. As only one lorry collects and gets sorted at the recycling yard.
In summer we have separate bins for glass, cardboard plastic tin cans and even a dog poo bin but unfortunately can not find anybody that will recycle the poo any advice would be much appreciated.
Why did you have both chemical and green toilet cleaner !
Regards

Nice sized pitches were a bonus with freshwater and drainage on each one was a bonus. Showers and toilets were porta cabin style but nice and clean.
Great site and some lovely places not far away. There is no wifi and no children on site which was a bonus for me. Nice and friendly owners.

    Disliked:

Not a complaint as such because I wear earplugs to sleep so slept well, but it is close to the A1 so expect some traffic noise.

lovely campsite in ideal location for the moors and the dales and all the attractions we want to see.
loads of room on the pitch.
really quite campsite even when full up lovely to sit in the awning and not hear any noise on the site.
    clean toilets etc.

    Disliked:

someone mowed the grass and moved my water barrel which messed up my pump which has to sit in certain way in barrel and we had no water next day.
would like to see information in a hut or something about doctor, hospitals etc
and local leaflets of places of interest

From the manager...

Evening Paul
Next time you visit for 3 weeks please can you pitch your caravan and water barrel with in the fully serviced pitch of 6 meters in width so the said someone who cuts the grass will not disturb your said water barrel and you will have water the next day.
Or alternatively buy your self a new water flow switch as to not waste water as the grass around the said water barrel was 6 inch long, thus having to move it to cut the grass

Regards
The some one who cuts the grass

Local attractions

History buffs will be well looked after hereabouts, with plenty to entertain, starting 25 minutes’ drive away at Mother Shipton’s Cave, England’s oldest tourist attraction. Plenty of stately manors are nearby too, with Newby Hall and Ripley Castle within 25 minutes, Beningbrough Hall and Garden 35 minutes from base, and the spectacular (and famed) Castle Howard within 50 minutes.

If history is preferred with an urban slant, head first to Thirsk (15 minutes) to explore the James Herriot museum, then travel on to Ripon’s cathedral and museums (10 minutes), Knaresborough’s castle and scenic viaduct (20 minutes), York’s minster, Jorvik Viking Centre and Shambles (40 minutes), and Durham’s castle, cathedral and museums (55 minutes).

Open-air time is highly recommended nearby too. Explores around the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks are, of course, a must, but not at the expense of visiting the Howardian Hills (25 minutes), the balancing Brimham Rocks (30 minutes), or the stunning gardens at Studley Royal (20 minutes) and Harlow Carr (35 minutes).

Adrenaline seekers, meanwhile, should make immediate tracks to Lightwater Valley, 20 minutes away, where in addition to pedaloes, toboggans and traditional fairground rides, Europe’s longest rollercoaster – the Ultimate – awaits. If that’s got juices pumping for more, it takes an hour to get to Flamingo Land to zip along rides in the theme park or meet animals at the zoo.

Must see

  • Fountains Abbey (11.8 kilometres)
  • Jervaulx Abbey (19.5 kilometres)
  • Rievaulx Abbey (23.2 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden (11.8 kilometres)
  • Brimham Rocks (19.8 kilometres)
