Highfield Escape: Front

General

  • Adults-only rural glamping site 10 minutes' drive from Bridgnorth
  • 20 minutes' drive from the UNESCO-listed attractions of Ironbridge
  • Firepits and shared kitchen on site; pub 20 minutes' walk away

Sometimes you just need a little escape, eh? You need a great swathe of open space, with rural views to gaze out over, friendly sheep in the neighbouring field and (fingers crossed) a gorgeous glowing sunset to admire while you sip something nice of an evening.

Sound like just the tonic? Then hightail it to Highfield Escape, a Shropshire rural retreat 10 minutes’ drive from Bridgnorth and with super views over the Clee and Wrekin hills. Friendly owners Tina and Mark have clearly put a lot of thought into making their bijou little site a perfect place to relax. Firepits and outdoor seating are all set up for alfresco evenings, with a shared kitchen on hand for days when indoor prep seems preferable (and a country pub 20 minutes’ walk away if a break from cooking features on your list of needs).

Perhaps most crucially, the folks here have also chosen to keep this place for the sole use of grownups, and for only a handful of guests at a time – so you’re pretty much guaranteed plenty of peace and quiet to aid the soothing of stressed souls.

Wrench yourself from your retreat to see some of your surrounds; canoeing, fishing, golf and tennis are all nearby, and there are plenty of attractions to explore, including UNESCO-listed Ironbridge and steam-powered rides on the Severn Valley Railway.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Everything about Highfield Escape was just as it says an escape. Mark & Tina were the perfect hosts. It was one of the quietest places I have ever stayed. The pod was immaculate and had everything we needed. The views were to die for and we were lucky enough to witness the perfect sunsets over the hills. Waking up to the sight of sheep in the morning made it even more special. The shower and toilets were perfect and very clean. We can not wait to book again for next year. Thank you.

The layout of the entire campsite, especially our pod was brilliant. The fire pit was a perfect addition to the experience and buying wood and fire accessories was easy and stress free. Beautiful views, including the perfect setting to watch the sunset both nights. The area was very clean and tranquil and the campsite was conveniently located near local amenities, especially the local town of Bridgnorth which was a wonder to explore in itself.

Everything - the views were amazing, the tent was comfortable, equipment supplied was more than adequate for cooking. The toilet and shower were excellent. Having the little shelter to cook in when cooking on the fire pit wasn't practical was very useful.

I decided to book Highfield Escape based on the reviews of the hosts being very friendly and i'm so glad I did!

Mark and Tina were gracious hosts, from before we booked, through our stay and til we left. Mark happily answered all my questions, especially as this was the first time we have ever done anything like this! Both Mark and Tina gave us great advice on the site (regarding bbq and fires/heat etc) and recommendations locally, all of which we followed and really enjoyed!

Highfield is extremely peaceful and serenic, we got clear days so enjoyed the stars. Facilities are 5*, thoughtful and clean. Can't wait to go back!

We felt very welcomed by the lovely hosts when we arrived and shown around ❤️. Everything was set up perfectly from the facilities inside the tent to the BBQ pit and the tables/seats outside.👍🏾 The toilet and shower was very clean! And had good sanitary products too. Common area outside that we hardly used but has a stove top cooker and sink if needed. Logs can be bought from the host for £4.50 which is very good, baring in mind how much you get! Have already decided we’ll be going again. Lovely trip would definitely recommend!

Local attractions

If you’ve got something of a nostalgic streak, you’ll be wanting to steam along for a 16-mile ride on the Severn Valley Railway from Bridgnorth (10 minutes’ drive); make a stop along the way at their Highley hub to get up close to a collection of old engines and see what damage can happen when a locomotive collides with a camel.

And there’s plenty more heritage around here, too: make the 20-minute trip to UNESCO-listed Ironbridge to eye up the Iron Bridge itself and visit the ten museums around the town hailed as the place where the Industrial Revolution kicked off. Or you may prefer to wander through the house and gardens at Weston Park (25 minutes) or peruse the planes at the Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford (20 minutes).

Not having kids in tow doesn’t mean skipping out the family-friendly attractions – you can just go at your own pace around the West Midland Safari Park (half an hour), the fairground at Treasure Island (40 minutes) or Drayton Manor theme park (an hour away).
