  • No-frills eco site in rural Hertfordshire, a 10-minute drive from Ware
  • Hertford 15 minutes’ drive; Knebworth House half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; communal fridge; shared areas for socialising
City life – traffic, noise and everything else that goes with it – getting you down? If you long to escape from all that, head to Black Grove Farm, an eco-friendly off-grid site a 10-minute drive from Ware. Its owners, a couple of teachers, did just that (escape from the Big Smoke, that is) back in 2016, when they moved to Hertfordshire and established this 20-acre community and educational farm. First of all: getting there is fairly straightforward, but you will need to keep your eyes peeled for the correct turn as you drive through the village of Colliers End. Then, when you get to the farm gate (which is kept locked, since it’s shared with the neighbouring property), give the owners a bell, and they will come to collect you and welcome you to their family-friendly site, which combines pasture fields and ancient woodland. Life here is all about simple pleasures: listening to birdsong, breathing in fresh air, walking the dog and hoping for wildlife encounters (visitors include a herd of wild deer, hares, owls and kites). Amenities are basic – a composting toilet, a washing-up area and a communal fridge; there is no running or drinking water (stock up at the large supermarkets in Ware), and no electricity either. However, you are welcome to light a barbecue; with communal spaces including a sheltered dining area and an outdoor firepit, you will also get to socialise with fellow guests at mealtimes.

Local attractions

The market town of Hertford (15 minutes’ drive) has a large green with a castle on the banks of the River Lea. A museum in town displays ceramics and items related to the Hertfordshire Regiment, while Hartham Common Park has wild swimming and watersports, plus tennis courts. Head south to Hertfordshire Zoo (25 minutes), where residents include tigers and snow leopards, as well as smaller animals like meerkats and lemurs, which you can meet and feed. From there, drive the short distance to River Lee Country Park, where you can ride a bike, spot birds and dragonflies, or have a go at the dog agility course. The elegant gardens at Knebworth House (half an hour) were designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century, and they now include a maze and a Dinosaur Trail. The grounds are also known for their lively calendar of events, which range from live music concerts to car shows.
