Yorkshire site scoops sustainability awards

Oct 16 2012 Posted by Laura Canning

Big congrats to Yorkshire-based site The Bivouac, which has scooped accolades for its eco-friendly ethos and buildings on site.

Owned by Sam and Beth Hardwick, the Masham site won the Best Project and Sustainability accolades at the annual awards of the Ripon Civic Society, which is committed to enhancing and preserving historic buildings in the area.

The Bivouac also received two Highly Commended certificates – one in the New Buildings category for its log cabins and one in the Best Restored Building Category for its stone barns, now renovated to include a shop, café and camping barn.

David Winpenny, chairman of Ripon Civic Society, said: ‘This year’s awards particularly recognise the value of a sustainable business, with The Bivouac leading the way in bringing visits to a rural area and providing local employment while respecting its location.’

The Bivouac has six hand-crafted wool-insulated shacks built from chestnut and set in woodland, as well as eight canvas yurts, each of which sleep up to five people. It’s open for eleven months of the year, allows campfires and welcomes student groups.
