  • Peaceful Friesland campsite five minutes’ drive from Hoornsterzwaag
  • Appelscha 15 minutes’ drive, and Aquazoo Leeuwarden half an hour
  • Spacious grass pitches; rooftop tea garden; shop five minutes’ drive
If you’d like to fall asleep under (hopefully) star-studded skies and wake up to the sound of birdsong in a quiet corner of Friesland, get packed up and head off to Camping De Oude Trambrug, five minutes’ drive from the small village of Hoornsterzwaag. As there are no set pitches, it’s down to you choose your favourite spot on the two camping fields (one sheltered by the trees of a pear orchard, the other with farmland and forest views). Both fields are landscaped with flower beds and alder trees, and there are several picnic tables from which to savour the peace and calm of this small-scale site. There’s wildlife all around and a well-stocked fishing pond a few steps away from the pitches if you’d like to try and catch supper to cook on the barbecue. No problems if you’re not successful though, as there’s a local supermarket within five minutes’ drive. Tip-top showers facilities are a short walk away in the farmhouse, where there’s a roof terrace with a rest area and tea garden for when you feel like chilling. With plenty of hiking trails straight from the pitches, it makes sense to bring any canine chums to join in with walkies (but keep them on leads while on the camping field please). There’s bike rental on site too, if you’d care to explore Friesland by pedal power.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Very warm welcome. Small, quiet site, which is what we were hoping for. Hired e-bikes and explored the countryside; second day drove to the coast, about 1 hour away. The kitchen and sanitary facilities were very up to date. No queues, so assume that people in motorhomes used their own toilets. The owners very helpful and friendly.

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

Stretch your legs with a stroll around the wetlands and forest of It Fryske Gea nature reserve (five minutes’ walk over the road), or head for Appelscha and Aekingersân (both 15 minutes’ drive) to cycle and hike trails among drifting sand dunes, heathland and woodland. Take Insta-worthy pictures of the flat landscapes from the top of Bosbergtoren viewing tower (15 minutes), and if you fancy sightseeing from a different perspective, hire a boat from Jachthaven de Drait Buitenstvallaat (20 minutes) to putter along the canals and waterways of Friesland. Take younger kids for a day on the gentle coasters and carousels at Duinen Zathe Amusement Park (15 minutes), while older children might well enjoy a poke around the cells and torture instruments in the National Prison Museum (20 minutes). Most likely the whole family will have fun at Aquazoo Leeuwarden (half an hour), where you can watch polar bear in spacious enclosures and walk with penguins along a beach. Sneak in a bit of culture with a snoop around the fine mansions of Beetsterzwaag village (15 minutes).
