  • Leafy Friesland family campsite five minutes’ drive from Hommerts
  • Easterwimerts marina five minutes’ walk; Leeuwarden 40 minutes’ drive
  • Grass pitches in landscaped grounds; boat hire or moorings available
Hidden away in Friesland’s scenic lake district and five minutes’ drive from the village of Hommerts, Recreatiepark de Uilenburg is a leafy oasis surrounded by trees and shrubs in the historic grounds of a century-old villa. Small in scale and family run, the site has spacious camping pitches for caravans or tents, each with its own power supply and drinking water. Cars can be driven onto the pitches for unloading and reloading all your gear, but otherwise they should be parked in the designated area so that kids – and any dogs – can run around safely in the pitch area. Once you’ve settled in, take a moment to appreciate the peace; there’s only birdsong to disturb the silence. Foragers can have a snoop for mushrooms in the forest, while wild mint grows in abundance around the site – if you know what to look for, you can pick some fresh leaves to brew up mint tea. Any mariners among you can rent sloops, fishing boats, canoes or paddleboards to explore the Frisian Lakes from Easterwimerts marina adjacent to the campsite. You can moor up on your own boat there too, and there are facilities for lifting craft out of the water.

Power optional grass RV campsite

Liked: A lovely place to visit. A great little family site offering many different types of accommodation. Attached to the site are many activities, boat hire, canoes etc The hosts were extremely welcoming and could not do enough to insure my stay was enjoyable. Good tidy and clean facilities, showers, toilets, WiFi etc, really good. The location was perfect, in a really quiet countryside location yet just 15 minutes from the historic Unesco rated town of Sneek. A must on anyone’s place to visit. . I will certainly be putting this particular site down for a return visit.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

A stay at Recreatiepark de Uilenburg puts you in the middle of Friesland’s wetlands, with direct access to Oudhof, Swarte Brekken and Witte Brekken lakes from Easterwimerts marina (five minutes’ walk). Novice sailors can take advantage of the sheltered waters to learn how to handle a dinghy, while experts explore further in motor boats or sloops. Most of the waterways are interconnected, so you can easily reach Sneekermeer, where there are plenty of lakeside cafés for mooring up and eating alfresco. Even for days out on dry land, it’s hard to escape the water. Cycle along the dike at Terherne (an hour and 20 minutes by bike) for views over Sneekermeer, or make for the heathland and forest of Gaasterland (an hour) for woodland tracks with occasional glimpses of the IJsselmeer. Historic Sneek (15 minutes’ drive) has lots to recommend it, from the impressive 17th-century Waterpoort and ornate rococo town to the collection of model boats and naval paintings in the Frisian Maritime Museum. Gorgeous Leeuwarden (40 minutes) has a Pisa-style leaning tower at Oldehove church, old boats at the floating Museum Harbour, and a lively café scene.
