  • Klampjuciems Beach 15 minutes’ walk; Pūsēnu Hill five minutes’ drive
  • Football field, volleyball and laser tag; communal kitchen and firepit
All set for a family adventure – but wondering where to go? Step forward, please, Spāres Prieduļi, five minutes’ drive from the ever-shifting sand dunes in Bernāti Nature Park, and 15 minutes’ walk from the sandy Baltic coastline in the quiet seaside village of Klampjuciems, tucked among the pine forests of Nīca. Here you can rock up in the car, park and pitch up on a level grass field with masses of space for family games, kids kicking a ball around on the full-size football field and games of volleyball or laser tag. There’s a playground for toddlers, bicycle paths and dog walks leading right into the surrounding forest. With everything that’s going on site, it’s a good job there’s also a sauna for lazy afternoons, and an informal bar with a sundowner terrace so you can recover from all the running around. Barbecue feasts can be magicked up on the firepit or in the covered communal kitchen with basic utensils and a gas hob. If you’re not feeling the alfresco catering vibe, make good use of the site’s grocery-delivery service.

Local attractions

So first stop? Perhaps it’ll be at Pūsēnu Hill (five minutes’ drive), the biggest sand dune in Latvia and accessed by wooden steps, or the sculpture trail laid out in Bernāti Nature Park (also five minutes). Go hiking in the wetlands of Lake Pape (25 minutes), or introduce the kids to birdwatching (you may see marsh harriers and ospreys if you’re really lucky) at the Kalnišķu hide (20 minutes). Heading north up the coast, Liepāja (25 minutes) has much to offer, from fine examples of amber jewellery and Latvian black, red and cream national costume in Liepāja Craftsmen House to military history in the fascinating Naval Fortress and a soaring art nouveau pavilion hosting Pētertirgus (Peter’s Market). Turning south, you can hop across the border to the Lithuanian seaside resort of Šventoji (35 minutes) to admire the landmark ‘Fisherman’s Daughters’ sculpture on the beach, or carry on south to the famed resort of Palanga (45 minutes), which has more than its fair share of sandy Baltic beach, as well as exquisite displays in the Amber Museum, housed in the restored Tiškevičiai Palace.
