  • Small, secluded site in a peaceful highland glen an hour from Glasgow
  • Five minutes’ drive to Loch Lomond, and 30 to the West Highland Way
  • Wild camping by a river overlooked by mountains, 10 minutes from shops
The Doune is a remote wild camping site set on the banks of the Douglas Water in a peaceful highland glen. Amazingly it’s only an hour north of Glasgow on the A82, but might as well be a whole different world – here you can pretty much expect peace and quiet. If you’re touring Scotland, this simple site (loos are provided) is a fab stopover for a night or two on your way north, or you can make it your base for sports activities on Loch Lomond, from paddleboarding to kayaking and sailing. There’s golf 15 minutes away too, and long-distance walkers can join the spectacular West Highland Way at Inverarnan (30 minutes). The West Loch Lomond Cycle Path runs through Luss (10 minutes) and of course, the river’s right next to you if you fancy a wild swim. You can pick up supplies from the handy shops in loch-side Luss, where there are a few ice-cream shops, bars and hotel restaurants to keep you going. There’s a pebble beach there for dips in clean water, and if you’re travelling with kids, you could take them on the Loch Lomond Faerie Trail (10 minutes) to spot miniature pixie houses hidden among the trees.
