  • Dog-friendly traditional Mongolian yurt with a hot tub and kitchen
  • A 15-minute drive from Dumfries House and 40 minutes from Ayr
  • Firepit, gas barbecue and wood provided; near a clubhouse and bar
What visitors might you get at the traditional Mongolian yurt at Afton Milis Glamping? Deer, hares, owls or barn swallows perhaps, and starry skies if you’re lucky – this is a very well-liked spot for Northern Lights spotters and stargazers. Stay in comfort and in style under big dark skies with this dog-friendly yurt’s large luxury hot tub, firepit and gas barbecue. With wood provided, it’s just the set-up you’ll need for stargazing and suchlike. If the stars can’t make it out during your time at this east Ayrshire site, the yurt’s high ceiling has fairy lights. Pair that with warm comfy beds, linen and towels, a logburning stove, wifi and room for five (including one small person or child on a sofa), it’s a cosy set-up indeed. There’s also a large elevated deck with sunloungers and a table and chairs. This small family-run glamping site may well already be ticking your boxes, but the full kitchen facilities are yet another asset. There’s a fridge-freezer, an oven, a microwave, a toaster and a kettle with complimentary tea, coffee and sugar at your disposal. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s a bar and clubhouse a couple of minutes’ stroll away from the yurt for a quiet drink, a game of pool or a weekend meal. And other little luxuries? These include a separate toilet and shower with shampoo and shower gel, an electric car charging point and Scottish breakfast packs by prior arrangement. For kids, there are outdoor toys, board and card games, a fairy hunt at the bottom of the garden, a fossil hunting kit, a travel cot, high chair and resident bunnies and a tortoise. Two well-behaved dogs are permitted. Foodies might want to visit the shops, café and bakery in New Cumnock (five minutes’ drive) or go for a meal in a lochside hotel and spa (10 minutes), calling by at the farm shop’s vending machine opposite. Cumnock (15 minutes) has supermarkets and a pool.

Local attractions

A quick walk to the bottom of Afton Milis Glamping’s wilderness garden and there’s access to a series of local countryside walks, including to Afton Reservoir (an hour and a half’s walk). More strolls are in store at Dumfries House (15 minutes’ drive) around the historic house, maze and gardens. Robert Burns fan? The village of Mauchline (25 minutes) has links to the historic figure and the seaside town of Ayr (40 minutes) is home to the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (35 minutes)… and lots of independent crafts shops for that matter. If woodlands are more your scene, make way for the Galloway Forest Park (from 40 minutes). Urban action, nightlife and historic sites can be tracked down in Glasgow (an hour).
