  • Adults-only site a five-minute drive from Ballyronan, on Lough Neagh
  • Belfast 40 minutes’ drive; Oxford Island Nature Reserve 50 minutes
  • Golfing and fishing on site for an extra fee; access to a hot tub
On the western shore of Lough Neagh, in the heart of Northern Ireland, Gracelands Glamping is an adults-only site that draws guests with the lure of a peaceful stay in comfortable, eco-friendly pods with separate bathroom. Oh, and a bunch of activities, too, not least golfing, for Gracelands sits within the parkland of Traad Ponds, a nine-hole golf course. (Please note: there is an additional fee for hitting the links – or for having a go at footgolf.) Swinging a club not your idea of fun? Maybe you’d prefer a spot of fishing. A number of catch-and-release ponds on site will yield pike and perch (again, an additional fee applies); if the fish don’t bite, you can still wind down on your fishing stand as you take in the scenery and the local birdlife. Watersports enthusiasts might be happy to hear that Lough Neagh is just beyond an area of woodland on the grounds of the property… Head to the marina in nearby Ballyronan (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk) to launch your paddleboard or canoe, or to book a boat excursion on the lake. There are also pretty lakeside paths, such as the Toome Canal Walk (10 minutes) or, further afield, the trails at Oxford Island Nature Reserve (50 minutes). Back at the site, you can have a relaxing soak in the hot tub, then chill on your pod’s outdoor decking as you decide where to go for dinner. There are pubs and take-away restaurants in Ballyronan; for more options (from brasseries to pizzerias), you might want to head to Magherafelt (10 minutes).

Local attractions

If you love the James Cameron film (or even if you don’t), you ought to pay a visit to Belfast (40 minutes’ drive), where the Titanic Belfast experience tells the story of the ill-fated liner, which was constructed here. Away from the docks, you can visit Crumlin Road Gaol for a primer on The Troubles or take a tour of the city’s colourful murals. Landscapes within the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (45 minutes) include moorlands, hillsides and valleys, plus the lakes of the Burren area. On the southwestern edge of the AONB is the Ulster American Folk Park, where you can learn all about Irish immigration across the Atlantic. The Old Bushmills Distillery (one hour) has guided tours that take you past copper stills and other accoutrements of the production process before ending in the tasting room where you can sample blended and single-malt whiskies.
