  • Well-kept, quiet Wiltshire farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum and Highgrove 20 minutes’ drive
  • Café with views over the fields; play barn for an additional fee
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids for a few days of country life, you should be heading to Down on the Farm, on the edge of the Cotswolds and 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury in North Wiltshire. This peaceful pop-up site is set on a beef farm with lots of curious cows to meet and great, and, for an additional fee, kids can access the huge play barn to play farm-themed games and ride mini tractors about the place. And for adults? Well, there’s a popular café with views over the farm fields, a modern facilities block with family shower rooms, and a camping field sheltered by mature trees. You can also set off on rural walks from the pitches, which are dog-friendly so Fido can join in the holiday fun too.  There are lots of options for family days out, whether it’s swimming at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) or exploring the standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). And if you’d rather just stick around and chill on site, you can look forward to regular colourful sunsets and nights cosied up around the firepit.

Liked Lovely family friendly site! Plenty of space for kids to play and the play barn attached to the cafe was an added bonus with a small fee to access it! Would definitely return!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely campsite, child friendly. The kids really enjoyed seeing the goat's and cows as well as playing in the maze and with the tractors.

Disliked Could do with more showers.

More showers are coming, unfortunately there is a backlog with orders and we want the same style as they are so nice.

As you say, not all of the field is flat, generally not an issue to people.

Power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked We had an absolutely brilliant stay and couldn’t fault it. Everything was clean, well looked after and really well organised, which made the whole experience easy and relaxing from the moment we arrived. The site had a lovely atmosphere and felt peaceful, welcoming and safe throughout our stay.
The staff were friendly, helpful and clearly took pride in making sure everyone had a great time. We enjoyed it so much that we’ve already recommended it to several friends and have started talking about all coming back and staying together next time. We would happily return and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to stay.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a lovely peaceful stay (admittedly on a very quiet couple of nights) and really enjoyed ourselves. We were given a friendly welcome and enjoyed picking our own spot for our tent. The bacon sandwiches from the cafe in the morning were delicious!

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It’s a quiet and nice place, very good for young kids to play the toys and sand. My 4 years old boy love it. The viewing is quite good as well.

Disliked There is only two bath and some extra toilet in the cafe. It’s not very busy when I came. But I think some small extra bath would be better.

We do have additional showers on order which will help when it is busier.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a truly wonderful stay at the farm! We live locally and keeping things simple were looking for somewhere close to camp for a couple of nights. I'm a single mum to a 6 year old boy - this was the idyllic location. And feels like a bit of a special secret. We'd previously been to a birthday party and thought it would be great to camp here.

He loved the play barn and going up and down on a tractor and playing in the huge sandpit, often making friends on site. We loved saying hello to the goats and seeing the cows.

We hired a firepit which was delivered to our campsite with wood already cut up and loved toasting marshmallows.

We had lots of space to play and there were some garden goal posts to play football, as well as basketball.

There is a fridge freezer available on the site if you need to keep things cool.

I thought the showers were lovely. Yes there are two, but we had no issue in being calm to use them when we wanted. They had plenty of space to move around and were kept clean.

The cafe is open in the day 10am-4pm which is an added bonus. Lovely cakes on display and child-friendly light bite options.

There are plenty of benches to sit at and some lovely areas to watch the sunset.

We spent one of our days at the nearby butterfly world and animal farm / soft play which we loved just a 20 minute drive away.

The nights were quiet and peaceful, a relaxed stay. The site was quiet by around 9pm.

Had an awesome peaceful view of the stars, planets and the glorious moon. Beautiful sunset.

The owners were really friendly and approachable and felt looked after during our stay.

Great budget-friendly stay.

Disliked Whilst the large open space is loved, as the site grows in popularity there may be an opportunity to paddock off some areas, of personal concern was the deep pond at the very bottom if there were parents with SEN children or small children. The owners did say that if it was of concern we could move into the other field. We were able to pitch our tent at the top of the field a good distance away from the pond.

I'm not sure if there was one but also a simple addition could also be a baby bath/ toddler steps / toddler seat for use in the shower rooms for young children too, I didn't ask for this, but these could easily be pegged up in the area just outside.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, we are so pleased that you both enjoyed your stay.

We do try to enable those with you children to pitch far away from the pond and we continue to monitor whether a fence is needed around the pond, we have lots who request one isn't put up as they feel it would spoil it.

We do have toddler steps within the toilets / shower blocks but we will look in to getting a baby bath for those who need one.

Local attractions

If the kids are with you, chances are the lakeside beach at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) will be your first stop; there you can go kayaking, swimming and dinghy sailing. Active types can also play a round on the local golf course (10 minutes), and you can exercise any dogs on the waterside or woodland walks at Cleveland Lakes Nature Reserve (15 minutes). There are more leafy strolls – this time among rare trees – at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (20 minutes), where you can take the kids to follow the Gruffalo Trail or run around on the tree-top walkway. You can tour the Royal gardens at Highgrove Gardens (20 minutes), and the gardeners among you might also like to see the manicured grounds at Bowood House and Gardens (35 minutes), while your offspring head for the aerial walkways and ziplines. Introduce some culture into your holiday with a visit to the Roman remains and Georgian-era architecture in Cirencester (25 minutes), or discover the three rings of neolithic standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). If the latter piques your interest, Stonehenge and its engaging visitor centre are but an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away.
