  • Well-kept, quiet Wiltshire farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum and Highgrove 20 minutes’ drive
  • Café with views over the fields; play barn for an additional fee
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids for a few days of country life, you should be heading to Down on the Farm, on the edge of the Cotswolds and 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury in North Wiltshire. This peaceful pop-up site is set on a beef farm with lots of curious cows to meet and great, and, for an additional fee, kids can access the huge play barn to play farm-themed games and ride mini tractors about the place. And for adults? Well, there’s a popular café with views over the farm fields, a modern facilities block with family shower rooms, and a camping field sheltered by mature trees. You can also set off on rural walks from the pitches, which are dog-friendly so Fido can join in the holiday fun too.  There are lots of options for family days out, whether it’s swimming at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) or exploring the standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). And if you’d rather just stick around and chill on site, you can look forward to regular colourful sunsets and nights cosied up around the firepit.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A family of 4 2 kids under 8 and a dog. We absolutely loved our stay as first time camping the pitches are very generously sized. Clean toilets and showers no queuing but the site wasn't overly busy. Fantastic views from our pitch. The kids loved the goats and spent many hours feeding them. Most of the grass was mowed during our stay.
Cafe on site and alcohol is served which was a bonus to get a cold one during the heatwave! Lovely coffees for the morning!
Play area on site which is open to the public aswell, kids loved their time olaying in the sand
We will be returning!!

Disliked Would be great to have a dog lead hook up outside the toilets but not a dislike just a recommendation to make it easier for campers with furry babies

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The camping land although the far end the grass was very high and not maintained like the middle area

Disliked Everything was great apart from the bathroom and toilets that Unfortunately did not seem to be regularly cleaned

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're glad you liked the camping land, the field has different areas for people to stay in, some people to choose to pitch up on areas that aren't mown as much as the set pitches.
The bathrooms and toilets are regularly checked and cleaned, we appreciate that there are times that they are not as clean as we would like, only the other day I needed to clean the toilet 3 times in less than 3 minutes. We will do more to check and clean them and hope our guests will also leave toilets in a suitable state ready for the next person.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely site, friendly owners. Nice cafe and play barn, great for younger children. Wi-Fi very reliable around the cafe and toilets, it didn’t stretch to our tent but we were right down at the bottom of the field. Nice that we can choose our pitch.

Disliked Queue for shower on bank holiday weekend, but owners are planning to install more showers.

Liked The view was stunning and so quite, very friendly staff

Disliked The shower floors were coming away

From the manager: We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit.

Where there was a leak with the shower it has obviously caused the floor to slightly move, we will look at.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We found the farm campsite on pitch up and booked for a family weekend.
Great site, running water, electric hook up, washing up facilities (although no hot water), play barn is amazing for kids and only £2.50 for the day per child staying on site.

Great site for families, friends, couples, although it is very accommodating for children it is also perfect for people without kids.

Homemade cakes daily!

There are toys in the restaurant / cafe, toys outside of the main barn by the goats.
Goats and cow’s people can stroke.
The owners are absolutely lovely and work really hard.

We will be back and have already recommended to friends!

Disliked Only improvements could be more showers as only two (someone super selfish spent an hour in there at peak time!), or at least a sign to remind the selfish people that others are waiting and not to take the mick.
I think maybe the showers are too nice for campsite showers so people want to do their make up and take ages in there maybe?
An idea if there was another shower block built would be smaller shower rooms so more can be fitted in, and an area outside with mirrors also so people can dry hair and finish getting ready etc.

Also mirrors in the toilets behind the showers as currently none there would be amazing!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. More showers are definitely planned and mirrors for the toilets.

Local attractions

If the kids are with you, chances are the lakeside beach at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) will be your first stop; there you can go kayaking, swimming and dinghy sailing. Active types can also play a round on the local golf course (10 minutes), and you can exercise any dogs on the waterside or woodland walks at Cleveland Lakes Nature Reserve (15 minutes). There are more leafy strolls – this time among rare trees – at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (20 minutes), where you can take the kids to follow the Gruffalo Trail or run around on the tree-top walkway. You can tour the Royal gardens at Highgrove Gardens (20 minutes), and the gardeners among you might also like to see the manicured grounds at Bowood House and Gardens (35 minutes), while your offspring head for the aerial walkways and ziplines. Introduce some culture into your holiday with a visit to the Roman remains and Georgian-era architecture in Cirencester (25 minutes), or discover the three rings of neolithic standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). If the latter piques your interest, Stonehenge and its engaging visitor centre are but an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away.
