  • Dog-friendly glamping in south Devon woodland, surrounded by a lake
  • Each unit is in its own private glade with lake views and a firepit
  • Breakfast, picnic and barbecue packs (including vegetarian) to buy
Hide among the trees at Travellers Rest, a south Devon glamping site set up for peaceful adults-only stays in a woodland surrounded by a lake. This place is also on a farm, so while mini humans won’t be around, you might very well come across small creatures like lambs and micro pigs instead... Meet the animals then shack up in your smart accommodation: the thoughtfully designed gypsy caravans at this site each have their own private glade with a firepit as well as lush views of the lake and surrounding countryside. The units are fully kitted out, with memory foam-topped beds, towels and bed linen provided, as well as lights and charging points. Bringing the dogs? Well-behaved dogs are welcome as well (two per caravan max, please), so much so that bowls and bedding are provided so your canine can eat and sleep in style (please just ensure that dogs are kept under control at all times, so that the park's wildlife isn't disturbed). And once they're fed, watered and thoroughly rested? Four-legged friends are sure to appreciate setting off on walks around this Dawlish setting, either along the coast or the banks of the River Exe nearby. By car, Traveller's Rest is close to the A38 for ease of getting about... perhaps to another place for walkies... Sorting supper’s just as much of a doddle: the park’s owners strive to make everything as breezy as possible for guests, including sourcing food and snacks. Each caravan is stocked with tea, coffee and fresh milk for your arrival and breakfast, picnic and barbecue packs (including for vegetarians) are available to buy. Since you’re in Devon, it’s also well worth splashing out on one of the traditional cream teas... Communal amenities are swish at this park too: they include a bathroom block with two self-contained rooms, with an eco-friendly compost toilet and a luxury shower in each.

Local attractions

If there’s enough room after all the cream teas toddle off towards a local vineyard for tastings and tours about 10 minutes’ walk away. It's worth staying energetic enough to pack in all the other activities around the local area as well, including forays to a fortified manor house with grounds home to about 600 deer at Powderham Castle (10 minutes' drive away). Swap countryside explores for sandy sessions at the seaside resort of Dawlish Warren 15 minutes away; alternatively, if Tudor houses, a cracking cathedral and underground passageway tours sound top, these Exeter attractions are all within about 25 minutes’ drive.

Liked: The caravan was lovely and a beautiful setting. Not as secluded as advertised but we were the only guest so had it to ourselves. The outdoor furniture was comfy and we enjoyed a lovely view across the field. The extending bunk was comfortable and had two great night’s sleep. The kitchen equipment is basic but adequate. We cooked a whole chicken and a roast pork and had everything we needed. The composting toilet was surprisingly low smell given it was 26 degree heat. My husband had a wonderful time in an off grid/back to basics experience. Would recommend it. Tip would be to take lanterns and torches. It is recommended and we really did need it. Darker than you think. They were accommodating. We asked for logs(£8) and loved sitting by the fire pit so asked for more for the morning so we could burn up our breakfast allowance. They were left by the toilet block very early. We bought washing up liquid and other camping bits but that was provided including spare bin bags.

Disliked: The dog bed wasn’t there but there wasn’t anywhere on the booking form to indicate a dog was coming(other pitch up booking pages usually add them on) it was warm and she was somewhat happy on the floor. It is dark at night. Had to text to ask for more loo roll. There was around half a roll when we arrived and assumed they would check and top up when they delivered logs or left a spare out. Still didn’t take away from the wonderful experience.

Liked: Glorious location nestled in secluded woodland. Gypsy caravans with their own private area including fire pit! Accommodation very basic but the owners provide bedding with extra blankets, and enough crockery and cooking utensils. They also provide washing up liquid, bowl, tea towels and oven gloves! The compost loos were clean, and the showers had hot water - what more does anyone need! My daughter and I had a beautiful break, surrounded by nature, it was the perfect reset!

Liked: We stayed for the weekend. Such an amazing and private space, recommended if you are looking for a quiet get away. A small drive to the coast for some amazing walks. Had an amazing nights sleep even when it rained. Was so peaceful. Accommodation was great, and had everything you needed inside. We tried the vegetarian breakfast and bbq food packs they offer. Very delicious. Dogs loved it too, there are a animals in nearby fields so you have to be aware of that with them. Shower was great and so was the compost toilet. I would definitely go back again.

Liked: Setting Shops only a short drive away Lovely beaches and walks nearby

Disliked: Lack of cooking equipment despite it being in the description Poor lights inside and nowhere to hang the ones we’d brought Nothing to clean to floor with after messy/sandy dogs, I don’t take cleaning equipment unless I’m camping
