52-acre site in the south downs national park

  • Lakeside site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from central Winchester; 1.5 miles from Marwell Zoo
  • Fishing, archery and other adventure sports
Zebras, tigers and bokibokies await in these handsome Hampshire surrounds – taking the kids to see Marwell Zoo's multitude of beasts is likely to make for some very happy hols indeed. Marwell Resort is within walking distance of this much-loved menagerie and is home to plenty of adventurous action in its own right – head here if you like the sound of oodles of outdoor activities in a pretty lakeside setting. The team at Marwell Resort have been instructing for more than 25 years, so they're well qualified to help you try out sports like archery and clay pigeon shooting. (Please note that many of these activities have a minimum age restriction applied.) The site lake has a total of nine swims available for anglers (mega-sized carp can be found in its waters, including whoppers weighing up to 45 pounds). Surrounded as it is by trees, it also looks pretty fine (especially at sundown) and is a popular spot with local wildlife. Marwell Resort has strong all-round facilities, including toilets, showers and wifi. There's also an on-site bistro restaurant that serves up nourishing meals seven days a week. You can set up a barbecue and cook your own grub, too (stock up on fresh meat and veg 15 minutes' drive away at Westlands Farm Shop).

What customers say

Great pitches, friendly staff & lots for families! Enjoy the soft play, mini golf & trails. Food and drinks are a hit, especially pizzas. Facilities mostly clean, but some water pressure/update notes. Generally relaxed, though occasional noise from neighbours reported.

Liked Fab site, easy check in. Pitch sizes were great, electric hook up was easy. Lovely clean bathrooms, great food at the bistro and restaurant. The pizzas we had on sat night were delicious, so lovely to have alongside live music. Also the 10pm/10.30pm quiet time was a godsend. We have stayed at loads of camp sites and some people can play their music at 1am which is awful but it was fair and everyone respected it and it was lovely. Would definitely stay again.

Disliked Only very picky and that was the size of the shop. There was no washing up liquid available (but again my fault for forgetting to pack mine) and the pizza bar ran out of cheese for the pizzas. (But again, we went to get a second pizza as we are greedy). A bigger more stocked shop would be fab finance wise for them, especially with so many bookings.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Pitch size was fantastic.
Eblutions were clean and there were adequate showers.
Bar lovely and food was tasty and good value

Disliked Ran out of soap and toilet roll frequently... it was a busy weekend.
Long walk from field B to eblutions
A small block of toilets closer would be ideal

Liked Sunset pitches. Nice and quiet and away from hustle and bustle of peeps.
Pizza evening
Activities. George was great.
Main toilet facilities.

Disliked The foul smell from septic tank or whatever is letting out the foul smell. Not pleasant when trying to eat and drink by the bar.
Toilets by bar not same standard and felt not cleaned.
Sunset pitch had a long walk to toilet. The shack facilities would be great to have in use.

Liked Friendly staff, clean toilet and shower facilities. Bingo night was good laugh and pizza on site was amazing. Everyone there was respectful if times etc and families.

Disliked Could have done with more events on, was disappointed that the wild activities were in such disrepair and un maintained. Guess its just a sign of the times with the cost of everything.

Liked Good facilities and lots to do especially with the kids. A short drive from Marwell Zoo. Nice fishing lake, playground and bar. They also have a pizza night - pizza was nice and made a change from BBQ.

Disliked Unfortunately despite booking together we were not pitched next to a group we had travelled with. This was a real shame! The toilet/showers although good should be monitored more regularly as we’re sometimes out of toilet paper and soap. The showers were a bit hit and miss.

Liked Amazing beautiful clean site with fantastic facilities and loads of things to do, friendly staff great stay all round.

Disliked My pitch tripped out all the time when using my kettle or microwave, so making food and a brew in the Campervan was awkward and frustrating instead of the stress free that I wanted, But that is it no other dislikes, Pitch B2 if you want to look into it.

Local attractions

Marwell Zoo (five minutes' drive) has over 140 different species to admire – you can also leave the car back at base and stroll over (about 20 minutes) for a pedestrian safari. Paultons Park (25 minutes' drive) is another perennial fave for family-oriented days out – here you can meet Peppa Pig, crash down log flumes or opt for wanders through a dinosaur-filled forest. The South Downs National Park has some truly splendid hiking trails, including the 100-mile-long South Downs Way (the trail starts 15 minutes down the road in Winchester). Mountain bikers also have plenty to choose from around these parts – an exhilarating bike track through the woods is on hand in the nearby village of Bishopstoke (10 minutes). The gorgeous New Forest National Park (25 minutes) is also within easy reach, and one of the best ways to get around is by open-top tour bus. There are three routes to choose from – it all comes down to whether you prefer vistas of heather-covered heathland or coastal explores. Speaking of the sea, beaches like Lepe and Highcliffe Castle (both 40 minutes) are very much worth the journey (make sure to pack jelly shoes and a towel if at all tempted).
