Non-electric grass pitches with fell views
Non-electric grass tent pitches

  • Off-grid wild pop-up with stunning fell views in Troutbeck Valley
  • Fell walks from the site; Windermere 10 minutes' drive away
  • Pitches by a stream; five minutes’ stroll to the local pub
Off-grid, relaxed, and with plenty of space to pitch where you want, the wild pop-up Mortal Man camping field is set just below The Mortal Man Inn – 10 minutes’ drive from Windermere in Cumbria – and is a simple, family-friendly base from which to enjoy the landscapes of Troutbeck Valley and the surrounding fells. No matter if you’re stopping over for a night or staying a bit longer, this place is all about fresh air, great views and easy access to the alfresco adventures that make the Lake District National Park so special. A fell-fed stream runs alongside the bottom of the camping field, adding to the peaceful setting and forging a real connection to the landscape with the noise of burbling water. Begin the day with the site's special breakfast deal of a brew and a barm for an additional fee. There are stunning views in all directions – especially at sunrise and sunset on clear days, and the site is spot-on for walkers and outdoor lovers, with plenty of hiking and cycling routes starting right from the pitches. And after a day on the fell, you’re less than five minutes’ stroll from the pub, where good meals, local drinks and a well-earned rest by the fire await.

What customers say

A simple, natural pop-up site in a beautiful valley. Friendly staff, great pub grub. Lovely views, walks nearby, peaceful vibe. Basic facilities & no running water are expected. Some found it tight when busy, portaloos could be cleaner. They're looking into capacity and cleaning.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Disliked Our experience at Mortal Man Hotel Campsite was very disappointing. From the moment we arrived, the check-in process was extremely slow and took around 30 minutes because the receptionist was repeatedly absent from the reception area.

The biggest issue was the campsite itself. The facilities are almost non-existent — there is only a toilet, with no drinking water, showers, sinks, electricity, or any other basic camping facilities. We also were not informed anywhere before booking that cars are not allowed in the camping area, which was a problem for us as we use a tailgate tent attached to our vehicle.

One evening, we returned to our tent and found that smoke from a fire nearby had filled the area so heavily that it was impossible to sit outside or even comfortably stay inside the tent. When we reported the issue to reception and asked for help, the response from the staff was dismissive and no effort was made to find a solution.

Considering the lack of facilities, the missing information before booking, the poor customer service, and the attitude of the staff, we feel the price is completely unjustified. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this campsite and would advise others looking for a comfortable camping experience to choose another location.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback! We're sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations.

We apologise for the slight delay you experienced during sign-in. While we always aim to provide a prompt welcome, there are times when our reception team is assisting guests elsewhere on the property, which can occasionally result in a short wait, especially during service.

Regarding the campsite facilities, our camping area is intentionally a basic campsite (it is a wild camping pop-up, as described) designed for guests looking for a simple, back-to-nature experience on a maintained ground with portaloos (which wild camping doesn't normally include). All the facilities are clear on Pitch-up regarding no running water, showers and about there being no vehicles on the field too. We feel our prices at £10pp, per night for Windermere reflect this. You can drive to the field gate and drop off belongings though to make it easier. Although there is no running water down there, there is a free water re-fill station in the restaurant, a vending machine and a bar for drink top-ups during our opening hours for those that haven't brought any with them.

We're also sorry to hear about the smoke from the nearby fire. Guest comfort is important to us, and we're disappointed that you felt your concerns were not handled as well as they could have been. As soon as the management team came in the morning, we replied to your email & sent our maintenance team down to have a look for you, but you couldn't be located. We have little control over nearby field fires that are not on our land sadly. It is a farming community in a rural landscape.

We appreciate your feedback, as it helps us identify areas where we can improve both our communication and our service. We wish you all the best with your future camping adventures!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Great location by the river with covered sitting area, friendly staff, and owned by a great pub. Late check-in wasn't a problem, after getting soaking on the fells for the day and wanting a valley site to get yourself sorted for the night.

Disliked Basic but reflected in price and is a pop-up campsite. Some pop-up sites are charging £25/30!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review Gary!

We're pleased you enjoyed the location, covered seating area, and the warm welcome from the team (they're fab!). It's also great to hear that our flexible late check-in helped after a wet day on the fells!

As a pop-up campsite, we're glad you felt the pricing reflected that.

We really appreciate your comments and hope to welcome you back for another stay—hopefully with a little more sunshine next time!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked It was ok once I settled in

Disliked Unwelcoming proprietor, made me fill in forms for sleeping in a field with NO WATER!! Apparently says on pitch up that you bring your own. Wouldn't allow me to sleep in my car either, for insurance purposes. If it's a wild camp, you surely don't charge people, or have those portaloos. He did let me fill up from the bar but the attention to comfort of guests was minimal. I know it's cheap, you rough it for that price, but water is a basic need and you shouldn't feel like a pain in the arse guest for asking for it! Sad how this pub has gone downhill

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn't meet your expectations.

We do clearly state on our Pitchup listing that this is a wild, off-grid pop-up campsite with no running water available on the camping field, so guests know what to expect before booking.

While there isn't a mains water supply on the campsite itself, the pub is typically open 10:30am - 10pm each evening, and guests are welcome to use our free water station themselves, purchase bottled water from the bar or the vending machine located at reception during opening hours.

We're also sorry if our insurance policy regarding sleeping in vehicles was disappointing. Unfortunately, this is not something we're able to make exceptions to. Our staff member did however suggest nearby roads, lanes and laybys, which there is plenty of.

For a £10 per person pitch, we aim to provide a simple, affordable wild camping experience while still offering facilities such as two portable toilets, benches and access to staying in the beautiful nature of Troutbeck valley between the hub of walking routes up the fells, which many guests appreciate as an added convenience.

We're sorry to hear you felt unwelcome, as that is never our intention. We wish you all the best with your future camping trips.
