  • Quiet family-run Cumbria site almost on the England-Scotland border
  • Hadrian's Wall, Lake District or Dumfries a half-hour drive away
  • Easy access to M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7
Which way will you go – north to Scotland, west to the Solway coast, east to Hadrian’s Wall or south to Carlisle and the Lake District? The options are indeed plentiful when you stay at High Gaitle Caravan Park, a quiet family-run site in the Cumbria countryside. This handily located site is just off the A6071 between Longtown (two minutes’ drive) and Gretna (five minutes), putting it almost on the border between Scotland and England. Easy access to/from the M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7 make this a useful spot for a short stopover on a long journey, but as you can see from the list above there are plenty of options for entertainment nearby if you’re staying over for a longer break. It’s a fairly simple setup here, with an emphasis on doing the essentials well rather than providing lots of facilities. That means you’ll have access to bathrooms (with a wheelchair-accessible area), a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, but you shouldn't expect things like wifi or a play area. Pitches are nicely flat and sheltered by trees, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue for a bit of outdoor cookery. Dogs are also welcome on site. Need any help while you're here? Friendly manager Steven lives on site and is happy to offer local advice – the family have lived here for many years, so they certainly know their way around.

What customers say

Great spot for stopovers near the M6. Staff are super friendly, pitches are roomy, and facilities are spotless. Some note things could be updated, but they're clean and work well. A bit of road noise sometimes. New owners are making good improvements.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Pleasantly surprised by this campsite. We used it as an overnight stay on the way further north as it’s a great location. The write up said it was basic but had everything you need but the extra little things they provide were a great touch. There were toiletries provided in each shower such as shampoo and shower gel etc and even toothbrushes if needed. The toilet block was immaculately clean and very well kept. In the utility room there were sachets of coffee and tea bags provided too, great if you have forgotten anything. Will definitely be using the site again

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Spacious pitches, no extra cost for awning, lovely welcoming owners. I really liked the extra touches like tooth brushes in shower block. My children have no excuse not to brush teeth now. Also free tea/coffee in utility room was a life saver after having to breakdown awning during Storm Dave

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We were welcomed on arrival over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. As a group of six in three VW campervans, we stayed on hard standing pitches with electric hook-up, which worked well for us.

A nice touch was the Easter egg from the site owners.

The facilities were spotless—easily the cleanest we’ve come across. Toilets were well stocked, with good quality hand wash and toilet rolls, and there were thoughtful extras like shower products and small toiletry kits with essentials such as cotton pads, cotton buds, nail file, tooth pick, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.

The location is convenient, with a bus stop about 300 yards away offering direct routes to Gretna (3 miles) and Longtown (1 mile) for pubs and shops.
The site is clearly well looked after, with facilities cleaned regularly throughout the day and night.

There’s also a useful utility room with hot drinks, a few snacks, washing-up facilities, and even an ironing board—everything you might need.
A small farm shop selling local produce like eggs, milk, bacon, bread, whisky, and haggis would be a great addition.

We had a really good two-night stay—and even managed through Storm Dave.

A well-run, welcoming site that we’d happily recommend.

Thanks to the owners for a great stay.

Liked Excellent welcome on arrival. Received a free Easter egg for my daughter which was a brilliant touch.
Lovely looking site when you drive in. Grounds were muddy but no fault from the owners - just the weather! Stopped one night on our journey to Scotland and was really pleased. Brilliant toilet facilities with little extras such as toothpaste and toothbrushes individually wrapped if needed. Really clean and warm also.
Staff were amazing, really made it for us!
Thank you for having us - will definitely recommend ☺️

Disliked Nothing really! Couldn't fault it for the price at all. It's a lovely site and would definitely recommend.

Local attractions

Sticking to the English side of the border first, you may like to head to Carlisle (20 minutes' drive) for the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum, perhaps taking a detour to Walby Farm Park (15 minutes), Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) or Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) en route. Head further down the M6 and you’ll get to the Lake District National Park (about half an hour) for walks, watersports and boat trips. There are lots of great walks over to the east, too, in the Northumberland National Park or the North Pennines National Landscape. Some of those trails take in sections of Hadrian’s Wall – or you can head directly to top spots like the Roman Army Museum (half an hour) and Housesteads Roman Fort (40 minutes). Moving north into Scotland, your first stop will surely be Gretna (five minutes) – you may not be eloping, as many couples once did, but the designer outlet may still furnish you with a new outfit or two. From there, it’s not far at all to places like Annandale Distillery (15 minutes) and The Devil’s Porridge Museum (10 minutes), telling the story of Gretna’s World War I munitions factory.
