  • Quiet family-run Cumbria site almost on the England-Scotland border
  • Hadrian's Wall, Lake District or Dumfries a half-hour drive away
  • Easy access to M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7
Which way will you go – north to Scotland, west to the Solway coast, east to Hadrian’s Wall or south to Carlisle and the Lake District? The options are indeed plentiful when you stay at High Gaitle Caravan Park, a quiet family-run site in the Cumbria countryside. This handily located site is just off the A6071 between Longtown (two minutes’ drive) and Gretna (five minutes), putting it almost on the border between Scotland and England. Easy access to/from the M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7 make this a useful spot for a short stopover on a long journey, but as you can see from the list above there are plenty of options for entertainment nearby if you’re staying over for a longer break. It’s a fairly simple setup here, with an emphasis on doing the essentials well rather than providing lots of facilities. That means you’ll have access to bathrooms (with a wheelchair-accessible area), a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, but you shouldn't expect things like wifi or a play area. Pitches are nicely flat and sheltered by trees, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue for a bit of outdoor cookery. Dogs are also welcome on site. Need any help while you're here? Friendly manager Steven lives on site and is happy to offer local advice – the family have lived here for many years, so they certainly know their way around.

What customers say

Great spot for stopovers near the M6. Staff are super friendly, pitches are roomy, and facilities are spotless. Some note things could be updated, but they're clean and work well. A bit of road noise sometimes. New owners are making good improvements.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Open nature of site - good facilities with thoughtful touches - very helpful owners - nothing too much trouble.

Disliked Limited hard standing so had to go on grass which was very spongy although extra hard staring pitches are being built.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Convenient location almost on border between Scotland / England & just minutes from M6 motorway. Friendly accommodating staff, decent sized pitch & clean facilities. Good window for booking times if needing to arrive later in day.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Friendly helpful staff
Clean facilities but very dated

Disliked Showers very small with hardly anywhere to get dressed and unable to avoid your stuff getting wet
Very small pitches surrounded by grass which was getting churned up and muddy
Too small and expensive for what was on offer and in winter
Also sick of people letting their dogs run around off the lead

Powered grass campsite

Liked Fantastic little site, lovely, clean and warm toilet facilities, nice and quiet, and the owner is really nice and friendly, I needed to leave early in the mornings and return quite late in the evenings (I was staying there for the Roger Albert Clark Rally) he was very accommodating, keeping the gate open until I returned, and made me feel very welcome. Would highly recommend this campsite. Perfect location being close to keilder forest for hiking and mountain biking etc.

Liked Great location, conveniently located just off the motorway. Clean toilet/shower block. Quiet during the night. Friendly owner.
Have already recommended to friends and family as a great stop off from Scotland to England and vice versa. Planning on returning again next year.

Local attractions

Sticking to the English side of the border first, you may like to head to Carlisle (20 minutes' drive) for the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum, perhaps taking a detour to Walby Farm Park (15 minutes), Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) or Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) en route. Head further down the M6 and you’ll get to the Lake District National Park (about half an hour) for walks, watersports and boat trips. There are lots of great walks over to the east, too, in the Northumberland National Park or the North Pennines National Landscape. Some of those trails take in sections of Hadrian’s Wall – or you can head directly to top spots like the Roman Army Museum (half an hour) and Housesteads Roman Fort (40 minutes). Moving north into Scotland, your first stop will surely be Gretna (five minutes) – you may not be eloping, as many couples once did, but the designer outlet may still furnish you with a new outfit or two. From there, it’s not far at all to places like Annandale Distillery (15 minutes) and The Devil’s Porridge Museum (10 minutes), telling the story of Gretna’s World War I munitions factory.
